Looking at the Chamonix IGN map, the massive trail that runs from the (newly opened to mtbs) Index lift right up the valley to Montroc immediately jumps out at me as a potentially awesome trail to ride. In practice is it just too damn rocky?
Also I hear about a whole host of new DH tracks being built in Chamonix at the moment, under the Index and Flegere lifts. What's going on?
Thanks!
The top section is covered in snow at the moment and when it isn't you wouldn't be allowed to ride it officially anyway. I believe the end of it goes into the national park area which is out of bounds anyway. Having hiked part of it it would be fairly gnarly and tight and no doubt covered in hikers.
There are two 'new' dh runs from index to flegere top station (red and blue) and a new one from flegere to les praz (red)
Had a look at the bottom one and it appears to be just switchbacks. I'm guessing they aren't as good as the 'normal' trails back down but the commune wants you off them
They open June 18
Drive over to Morzine/ Les Gets ??
Im pretty sure that lac blanc is in the aiguillettes rouges national park, which is strictly no bikes.

It is and I got turned back by rangers who caught me (innocently) heading that way. After walking up to Lac Blanc the next day I was pretty pleased they had stopped me!
There might be more bike friendly cheeky trails up that way that I never saw but it was all covered with snow up on top when I was there. I started from Argentiere BTW.
