Can one do much that is credible for a computer networking job (network support or analyst) at home?

When I say credible - they wont scoff/laugh at it on the CV...

I just can't see how one to gets into that job area, even at the bottom

I would of thought you'd need more than university

Don't see why you would need University for network support...

You can always play around with networks at home, setting up different OSes, etc, whilst reading books and maybe even trying some accreditation like Brainbench?

It might be easier to get into a Linux based environment from being a self-starter - most sane places would always consider a self-starter as, by definition, they are more pro-active than a non-self starter/someone who believes you can only learn on the job, which is a dangerous attitude.

However, you also don't want to be too geeky...
