specifically pics of your bikes with the post extended for climbing.

have found a frame for a friend but he's now umm-ing and arrr-ing as he thinks it looks too dirt jumpy with a small frame.

he's 5'8". please convince him he needs a 16" and not an 18". abuse welcome.

cheers

J

He cartainly DOES NOT want an 18in frame!! It will be far too long. Bikes are sized more on top tube length than pure frame size these days anyway.
I'm 5'8" too and a 16in Inbred (which is virtually identical to a 456 size wise) is perfect for me, the best fit I've ever had. It's not looks that count, it's FIT FIT FIT!!!

Fron the O-O site

{about 18in frames} We recommend them for riders as diverse as 5ft 9in to 6ft 2in. At each end of that scale, say an inch or two in height, you can easily go up (at the top end) or down (at the bottom end). So shall we have a quick go:-

“I’m 5?9? - well, you can either have a 16in or 18in frame.

Which means that 5'9" is the MINIMUM height for an 18in frame, but at that height a 16 would be fine as well. 16in fits up to 5'10"-5'11"

😀

Its not just height that's important, its also inside leg length and/or arm length.

5'10" and opting for the 18 as same effective top tube as FS - both to run 70mm stems. Went from medium to large on FS frame as medium just too short, so forced to run long stem.
It all depends on what feels right - FS always feels like everything in right place when I jump on, old HT always felt squashed up and clumsy.

5'10" on a 16" here, based on Brant's recommendation. Run it with a 70mm stem and layback post and fits fine. Yes the post sticks out a long way and my mate (who is usually behind) can see it flex, but just adds to the comfort!

5'9" here and ride a 16" 456 with in-line post and 60mm stem, pretty much perfect I find. Low top tube for good stand over and makes it easy to move around on the bike. The best hardtail I've owned.

I'm 5' 8" with a 16" Ti 456. I used to have a 18" DN6 inbred, as I like a lot of stretch, but it did feel a bit barn door-ish. If your mate isn't into downhilling/jumping/messing around then an 18" frame would be fine, but in that case why not buy a lighter/shorter travel frame?

This is pretty much how mine is for climbing, and pretty much everything else (I'm not really a seatpost tweaker), it's a 16" 456 & I'm about 5'9"

Id say go for the 18" my personal opinion is that "realy high" seat posts look a bit silly.

I am 5'8" and I ride a 16" 456 but I do have to use a 400mm seat post (350 would be too short)

Bloody brilliant I am glad Knottie persuaded me not to get a 18

18 Was great for all day riding, but when it gets tight and twisty the 16 is so much more fun 😉

im thinking the op is only interested in 456 fit as its a bit odd compared to some bikes 😉 the tt on my 16 456 is longer than the tt on my med 5spot

Five eight and 16 inch is perfect on an inbred, 18 inch would be far too big, I run a 70mm stem and a 400mm post, personally I like the long seat post look, its just like that so youve got lots of standover height. I used to run a 90mm stem and the bike felt a bit stretched and Ive got a long body, well if thats possible for someone of five eight that is.

I have both and I am bit taller than your mate - it needs to be a 16" for both body and legs

5'10" here and had a 16" 456, it was spot on for size. My new 18" BMC has the same tt length.

Bucking the trend here but I'm 5'8 1/2". Had the 16" Soul below for a while. Always felt too small. Probably at the bottom of the range for an 18" but prefer room to move about a bit. Hucking big jumps isn't my thing though.

I'm 5'8" & bought an 18 because it was cheap second hand.
Found it great for big rides as I like long top tubes, ran it with 80mm stem & layback seatpost, but would have a 16 next time if I was going to buy another.

5'10", 16" here with an 80mm stem and a 400mm seatpost. I've actually just changed to a 70mm stem, first proper ride tomorrow.

[IMG] [/IMG]

PS IMHO, your friend wants a 16"!!! 🙂

6ft on a 16 here, but it is my 'stupid bike'.

It might depend on him and his dimensions, I am only 5ft 8in and am happy on an 18" its is too big really according to the bumf, but I think it looks right, it certainly feels right. Old bikes for comparison.

Medium Stumpjumper (sold)
[img] [/img]
Stolen Tinbred 18"
[img] [/img]
Scandal 18" I got a spoon saddle on it now and that meant more post showing, and does look nicer for that (scott saddle was borrowed just cos it was white!)

16" is the way to go!! 5ft 9 here..

16" 456 with a 60mm stem.. hell need to think about the top tube length too as its longer than your average bike on an inbred!
