There's nothing else here, just butter, shall I daub it over the chain in a desperate effort to get the chain to STFU while I ride home?

And Putoline will get rid of it won't it?

Or the other options is NikWax BASEFRESH Deorderising sports fabric conditioner. I've always wanted a nice smelling chain.

Stand down. Just found the world's smallest pot of 2 stroke engine oil.

Damn! I wanted to know the outcome of the dairy-smooth ride home. Can you not try it just for us?

If I remember correctly, Marlon Brando used to swear by it.

I've used cooking oil to sort out mates' bikes when they turned up with rusted up chains or forks jammed solid and we were stuck with what we could buy at a grocers. Problem with butter, it usually contains salt.

Can I suggest replacing the spring in your letter box with a weaker one?

Someone sent using butter mid-ride in as a GCN Hack submission a few weeks ago, seemed to work ok.

My (ex) brother-in-law made it round from ****stan on the Karakoram highway through Tibet and on to Delhi on an 80s Stumpjumper (in the early 90s) having to use Yak butter on numerous occasions.

At least that's what he told us; it made for a good story!

Once on a long cycle touring ride in a remote part of France, my mates bike started squeaking from the headset. We dropped the fork out at lunch to find the bearings completely dry. We used the small butter squares for the baguettes that we were making up as we went along. Worked a treat and the butter stayed in there until we got home a few thousand miles later. Go for it.

I can't believe it's not chainlube.

That's an utterly butterly ridiculous idea 😉

@dangeourbrain it has no spring. Flaps in the wind.

Next time I am up at the Comrie Croft. Will hit up the farm shop for some hand churned and report back.

Preferably unsalted.

Lard is probably better lubricant? It was used for cutting oils in the past.

A mate used the oil from a tin of mackerel once. It stopped the noise but I've no idea how effective it was as a lubricant.

Flaps in the wind.

Couldn't you try a bigger culet to prevent this?

Every time I cook a leg of lamb I think I should keep the fat for chain lube. It seems almost impossible to wash off my hands, so it must be long lasting on chains too, no?

I have used marg on the chain in student days, sort of works OK but if you get a big lump of it in the cassette it stays there for ages. Go utterly butterly or similar for best results.
