Loads of videos on t'internet of people using various flammable sprays to inflate car and truck tyres onto rims.

Anyone tried it with tubeless mountain bike tyres?

I’m sure Pinkbike’s Mike Levy had an unsuccessful attempt. Can’t remember whether there was a video

Here you go

I've seen it being attempted - it didn't work...oddly it worked perfectly on a tractor tyre, but completely failed to do anything with the bike tyre other than get a wee flame that danced around the rim before going out.

The basic principle is the same - so it should be do-able :o)

I just need someone to hold my beer for a second hahahahahaaaa

I watched Oppenheimer the other night; probably igniting the whole atmosphere knowing my luck.

I quite fancy trying this - but would have to be an old tyre and wheel from a reasonable distance. Suspect if it did blow properly like big tyres do, they'd both be pretty much destroyed.

You just need to use something a bit more volatile. The air/accelerent mix needs to be better than they're achieving with wd40 due to the small volume of the tyre which is why it burns rather than flashes.

You might manage it on a fatbike tyre with wd.

Also on a truck/tractor there's a lot of weight restraining movement of the system so the tyre deforms a lot compared to the movement of the wheel and tractor. Your bike and wheel isn't very heavy, it's not attached to the bike either so the whole system is given to move much more readily.

You might manage it on a fatbike with wd.

The rims on your tractor or truck are also much less plastic than the ones on your bike so are much less given to deform naturally in comparison with the the when subjected to a sudden load.

It's also not much helped by the folding bead, it's likely to work much better with a wire one which more naturally follows the rim before it's inflated.

Yep, sounds like the voice of experience.

My ex could seat a tyre at fifty yards if you so much as rolled your eyes.

Did it once on a baggy fat bike tyre. I can’t remember what I sprayed (paint lacquer?) but it went BANG and I had to flap around to put the flames out. Smell of burning rubber, and never repeated.

Did it seat the tyre though?

More importantly, did you video it?

God it annoys me how casually people tape rims in videos, given that even when I dedicate an hour to the job I still so often end up with a poor seal

Plastic...surely not in an alloy rim...maybe the rim tape?

I think he means 'plastic' as in malleable, not the material. But I don't think the word plastic, even in that sense, actually means malleable 🤷‍♂️

Assuming you mean me Plastic* though to be honest the elasticity is likely to be at least as much of a problem.

*As above, however it may not be the correct term to describe something of a higher plasticity

Hi-Viz, Goggles and ear defenders... But Wearing shorts with Rubber gloves(?), which he then takes off and flip-flops; no flame retardant clothing or even long sleeves?

Literal H&S Gawn Maaaad!! using PPE but for the wrong hazards...

It would probably melt the rim tape but using hairspray or aerosol deodorant has a good chance of working.

I'm not volunteering to try it!

Isn't it gas lighter refill gas bottle that they used on some old top gear with the monster 4X4 tyres on some Iceland glacier?

WCA is obviously the guy to try it on a bike tyre 😁

But why? Apart from damage to yourself, unnecessary damage to the environment, why would you do it?

But why?

My track pump wasn't doing the job, I didn't have a compressor or an airshot and I'd used both my CO2 canisters.
Also I wanted to see if I could😈
