We will be in touch
After much searching I’m lucky enough to have found a Ragley Trig frame for a bargain price, but it does need a little finishing…
frame is coming with seatpost, stem and bars, not much else
looking at building this up 1x
I have some 700c Halo White Line hubs / wheels that will fit so that’s something sorted
In regards to groupsets I do currently have within the spares box…
2x11 105 STI levers (ST-5800)
11sp 105 derailleur (RD-5800) that has a mech extender on (previous owner said he’d used a 40t cassette with the extender)
TRP Spyre brakes
Compression cables
my question(s)…
how well would the above work if I bought a BB, crankset and cassette and threw it all together?
would I be better off waiting a bit to find a complete new or used groupset (maybe something a bit more “gravel”) and putting that on?
I’m a bit of a Shimano fan but not against going full SRAM if there’s a decent enough argument for it
advice / suggestions greatly sought after
TIA

Pretty much all Shimano 11sp road and gravel is cross compatible.
You run into issues with GRX since the chainset sits 2.5mm further outboard so (usually) it needs a GRX front mech although you can often persuade other front mechs to work.
However an (eg) Ultegra 11 sp rear mech will work with (eg) GRX 11sp STIs and any 11sp cassette.
Most rear mechs have a stated max tooth capacity however Shimano are generally very conservative on this and a rear mech will usually go at least 2T more than stated as the largest sprocket. More than 4T and you start needing mech extenders to clear the biggest sprockets.
should all be fine. Spyres are short (road) pull ratio. you might want to lock the LHS shifter with a false cable.
Please excuse my ignorance…
is that you telling me that an 11sp gravel cassette would work with my existing shifters, mech and extender?
if so, great news as it keeps the costs down and the bike running (for now)
not concerned about from mech as I don’t intend on using one
Assuming the above assumption is correct, are you able to offer any advice on which front crankset / chainring I should look for?
many thanks

considering keeping that for a dropper…

Yep, that'll all be fine. Any 11sp cassette will work, the spacings are all the same. Anything from a roadie 11-28 right up to MTB 11-40(ish). More than 42 and I think you'll run into problems with the mech capacity, that starts getting into full-on MTB territory then.

Literally anything that can be spaced to sit about middle of the block chainline wise. Even a SRAM 1x will work.

Yes. Gravel specific 11 speed cassettes don't exist.
If you are using a MTB (or an 11-34 road) cassette then you'll need to add a spacer between the cassette and freehub but the road mechs will work fine.
Ribble are selling grx 600 cranks off cheap at the moment too which would work fine.
So, thaks to the advice given above, I did a bit of looking about and found
And
can anyone be kind enough to advise as to whether these would work for now* with my existing shifters or am I barking up the wrong tree altogether?!?
@slackboy couldn’t find the cranks you mentioned…
*whilst I hatch a plan to save up for a full fat GRX groupset in the future…
First is the donor bike flat mount? If it isn’t then you might need new brakes or adaptors.
If you want to to run a huge cassette just by a grx rear mech. I’m sure folks are saying they’ve run upto 50 teeth

No need to lock the shifter...I thought this but got told there is a spring in the lever and its not dependent on mech pull...anyway did the deed and went 1x and yep the 2x lever just sits there no problem
Must have been confused.
That slx chainset won't work, it's designed for thinner 12 speed chains
Chainreaction have grx600 for £75
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/p/shimano-grx-600-11-speed-chainset
Fairlight cycles have the grx800 for £92 on their eBay site, which would be the ones I'd go for. I've used fairlight before and service was good
thankyou for the links
I HAD got a bit over enthusiastic (excited) and ordered one of the SLX units but, For the same price (or thereabouts) I think the GPX one might be a better bet. will try cancelling the SLX order and go for one of those instead
