Hi all
I have around £700 to spend on a DH bike. Gonna be used only occasionally , i.e Annual Alps trip, various uplift days (inners, antur stiniog etc)
Have looked at bikes like
Scott gambler
Orange 224
Kona stinky
Iron horse sunday
Specialised big hit
What would you guys reccomend?
Could maybe stretch to £800 but dont want to spend too much on a bike i will use prob 3/4 times per year
Cheers

Could you not buy a bigger fork for your current bike and save like £400? Perhaps some new tyres and wheels too to save from totalling your 'good' wheels.

if i had the cash i would be buying this. http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/1269893/

seems a genuine seller. and seems very cheap and will be very very retro one day. As i said if only i had the cash.....

I did my first dh bike on the cheap and tbh, I just didn't want to ride it, it wasn't as good as my everyday trailbike. I haven't done Antur Stiniog yet but I'm yet to do an uplift that I wouldn't happily ride my Hemlock on.

Guess it depends what you already have though!

224 and reasonably recent Bighit are generally good options but you've got to be really careful buying a cheap used DH bike- often they've been hammered and often they're a bit neglected too, kids or folks who just can't afford the upkeep, or who've decided to run it into the ground before selling.

If you're not bothered about winning a DH race, Scott Voltage FRs are really good fun on DH tracks. Should be able to get one for £800
They pedal well, good suspension ratio/action, corner nicely and are really good for big jumps.

You'd be able to get a demo 8 for that. I really miss mine, best bike I've had 🙁 (was nicked)

ignore the stinky haters

mines ace- getting the shock loco'd helped
I had fun chasing a gang of tr450 riders on mine in morzine last year

any of the bikes listed are good shouts, but be patient and look out for the mint ones, they are out there, the grom appeal and snobbery shown above mean that lightly used stinkys can be had cheap too!!

It'd be an early one, 05, 06 or 07 but yeah I reckon so, there's on on the bay at £800 with no bids so far.

Another stinky fan here, I've nearly finished a new build(it needs wheels). one extra that I would throw into the mix is the norco atomik which can be picked up quite cheap. Proper 4 bar rated quite well.

The one on ebay is £800, granted he did say that he'd run to that. I still wouldnt buy a full on 8" jobby for occasional uplifts and a week in the alps. Hell I do uplifts months and live abroad in the summer, still dont ride a DH sled.

You appear to be looking at frames only on pinkbike?

Theres one sunday under 900 and no 224 and no gamblers full bike..

Maybe big hits..

I recently built up a commencal supreme 6 for about 750. Has a number of new and second hand parts. Stuck 180 mm marzocchi 66s on it. Yet to ride it tough...

let me know when you're ready to do something mate, I'm in Preston 3 days a week so could maybe meet up if you fancy looking at it? There's almost no chance that I will get my act together and do anything about selling it in the next month anyway! It's a 2009 in a medium, the black and green one.
My email is in my profile

ebay, pinkbike and whatever southern DH turned into.

Keep watching until something comes up.

In the end I "just put a bigger fork on my trail bike" it trashed it.
