I'm building a bike up for touring about a bit. 100 year old leather designs, is that really
what I should be looking at?
Yes. If it ain't broke...
yes!
No!
Yes, but only if it's steel or titanium frame, ideally lugged.
Don't know why it matters,
but it is a 853 frame............
Heavy, expensive, extremely comfortable (for me), vulnerable to water damage.
Definitely not light, coming from a mtb perspective, but I'm talking months of miles, would you?
Got three on road bike two B17s and a Colt great saddles .keep it dry underneath .Bought my son the green B17 and it has sagged badly because he rode with no guards
Well respected info....more the better!
Proof it from underneath before using it as it soaks it up better from the non shiney underneath.I use a leather dressing on the underside that you can work in really well .Then use proofide on the top.
My dad warmed his up in the oven (yes really)and put loads of beeswax on both sides of it this seemed to work well. I was surprised to find out that Brooks are owned by Selle Italia.
There's a new rubberized Brooks, check out Charlie the bike munger
Unbelievably, they're worth it.
I use some Sno-Seal on the underside of mine and it's been perfect from the first ride (3 years ago) to today - several thousand miles.
Yes! But not a b17 narrow, **** me that gave me weeping sores. Had to buy a spoon from Evans just to get back from work by the Friday.
Little-known fact: Brooks leather saddles are beaten together in the same factory using the same tools that were used in Medieval times to make chastity belts out of thick leather and wrought iron.
The rubberised saddles are made in Italy, which was slightly disappointing.
Like many former UK owned companies it required foreign management to allow them to flourish.
I have put 17000km on m brooks b17 I got the version. Not one saddle sore and only a couple of hundred grams heavier then the saddle it replaced
Brooks are for posers. These work better:

Oh, I have one of those Spa Cycles ones. Excellent shape, just as supporting as a B17 but MUCH harder, hardly any give at all. I gave up trying to break it in after about 700 miles, it's exactly as firm as when I bought it. If that suits you, then great, I replaced it with a B17 when they were on offer at Halfords in the summer. Yours for the promise of a charity donation.
I got my first one today so I'm no help in answering this. I'm looking forward to finding out though ๐
I really like the San Marco Vintage Saddles...
Got one on my Vaya, & loving it..

Pretty sure Steve Makin has one on his Fargo.
Cambium here on a Cotic Roadrat. Haven't clocked up too many miles yet, but very impressed so far.
Spa nidd here too.....
Lovely but took 1000 miles to break in fully!
Like wood out of the box.
Midlifecrashes I'll take you up on that...
Which charity??

They look really nice, but I'm also a bit disappointed they're not made in the UK. I presume this is something they're looking at if they really take off.
Also, the non-neutral ones are meant to leak dye - anyone else heard this?
I wouldn't put anything else on a touring bike.
My current one is a ti-railed b17 and it was comfy from the off (10 years old now). Before that I reckoned I could break in a b17 in a long weekend.
As above, proofhide it and keep it from getting wet.
No!
used one for 3000miles. hated it! uncomfortable and fragile
I have a brooks swift on my commuter and have done around 5,000 miles on it. The first 500 miles took some breaking in but after that it has been really really comfortable and would highly recommend one.
Once broken in - yes!
Oddly enough all the above comments seem appropriate to the ex editor of news of the world
Anyone else with a C17 yet?
