Broken ankle:- How long before I can ride again?

[#13536539]

Slipped off a curb and broke my ankle last week while walking. Weber type b fracture of the fibula. Have to go back to hospital next week for a load bearing X-ray to see if I need pins/plate to stabilise, hoping they can just manage conservatively without surgery.

I’m pretty depressed I can’t ride at the moment, anyone had a similar break? How long before you could ride a bike? Most of my riding is XC singletrack and gravel riding rather than sending it at bike parks.

What did the doctors recommend?

I broke my fibula in 2017, stabilised with a plate, pins and screws.
i was 6 weeks non weight bearing, was back on the Ebike around 4 weeks after that, I definitely noticed that every time I went on my bike there was a noticeable difference by next morning.
gentle pootling only, I didn’t want to be jumping off and landing on the broken one eh.
Edited to add: ankle broken 30th December, first photo of my bike outside was 11th march. That’s 10wks.
but i had went out about a week earlier to actually ride.

What did the doctors recommend?

I only saw a nurse in minor injuries who put a cast on it, assume I’ll see a doctor next Friday when I have the weight bearing xray

A noticeable difference in a good way after a ride?

10 weeks is longer than I was hoping😬

Did they say when the cast would come off? Just a guess, but I would expect them to recommend waiting until the cast is off as a bare minimum.

Following this with interest. I broke my ankle a few years ago but didn't get it sorted at the time. Long story but I just kind of limped it off. Went to GP a few weeks ago as ankle was getting a bit crunchy. Was referred to X-ray and now on urgent waiting list for orthopaedic surgeon. Have been told I need to go in for weight bearing x-ray and see consultant but all indication is surgery will be needed.

I'm not so fussed about riding, but both me and the dog need our daily walks.

Just a thought, came across this ebike recently. You can pay extra £200 (so ~£1400 total) to have your ordered folding ebike certified by DVSA to have option of using twist throttle instead of pedalling to reach 25kph, albeit the battery will be used quicker.

They do a monster tank cruiser model with the option too I think.

I’m sitting on the sofa, chilling and reading STW. I read this post, and asked my wife, who’s sitting on the other couch, and is a chartered physio. 12 weeks is her answer.

What @Johnhe said, sounds about right to me. The last time I broke my ankle (oh yes, I said last time), I was in a stookie for 6 weeks, then a stirrup support for a further two or three weeks. No surgery required but I think I broke it in early October and it was nearly Christmas before the pain had eased and I felt confident enough to go out on my bike again.

Depends if you are told no weight bearing. I waited until my consultant said I could take it easy - this is where a turbo can be useful (I mainly use mine if injured).  It was about 4 months with my broken spine and 3 months with hip/pelvis fractures.

Got to get a bit annoyed though - 'just limped off' (above), that's what happened to me with my hip/pelvic fractures. Even went back 6 weeks later, nope x-ray says OK - are you sure, and waved an email from my physio who thought it was a hip fracture. CT Scan, and I was admitted immediately, with potential hip replacement on the cards. It's not been replaced just yet, but there were some scarily big fractures still in my pelvis after 6 weeks (I've referred back as it aches a lot even in summer, and sitting my left leg down to foot starts to tingle and go numb/feels like it's swollen.

Patience young Padawan. You are looking minimum 6 weeks, more if more severe.
