Off on hols this afternoon - road trip in the van to Pembrokeshire with a weekend in the hills on the way.

We were planning a family ride on the Taff Trail tomorrow and were thinking of having a pootle around the Derwen trail at Brechfa as a family on Sunday - my wife's bike is running commuter tyres at the moment though so was wondering whether to switch them for something with more grip? Any idea what the surface is like - it's billed as being a novice ride suitable for hybrids but wondering how true that is. Cheers.

I often see hybrids around, although it would be much better on a MTB. The extra bit on the blue is definitely MTB trail.

They are designed as beginner MTB trails, rather than multi use trails. Surface is mostly smooth and quite wide.

Both are brilliant fun! 🙂

If you are driving down through mid Wales.. try your very best to visit Nant yr Arian for the red kites, lakeside walk, playgrounds and the rather good mtb trails.

Thanks guys.

Wife's bike is a Gary Fisher MTB with rigid forks and Conti Travel Contacts. Think I'll stick some knobblies in the van.

Reckon the green is doable with a child seat if I take it easy? My plan was to do the Green as a family pootle and then do an extended / faster ride incorporating the Blue on my own later.

@Cloudnine - hoping to save Nant yr Arian for another trip.

It should be ok with a baby seat, albeit thrilling for the lottleun. There are a couple of berms and rollers, but should be fine if you remember to curb your enthusiasm.

Great - thanks. My boy did the Green at Coed y Brenin on a top-tube mounted seat at about 9 months and comes out on rides on Dartmoor with me now so he's used to it!

The Brechfa green is a lot more lively than the Brenin green. It is the most technical green route I have seen and more technical than quite a few blue routes.

IMHO, Brechfa Blue/Green are some of the best designed trail centre trails there are. Ridden slowly, they're either a nice challenge for a noob, or a leisurely bimble en famille.

Ridden hard and fast, they're superb fun!
