As Audi is apparently the new BMW (ironic after their old ad slagging that type of individual off) I find myself wondering if anyone really believs cr*p like this these days, or am I just mellowing in my old age?*
Sure I notice beemers parking badly etc, I expect that's more to do with the stereotype, than beemer drivers actually doing more of it than drivers of any other brand.
Seems to me they are good cars and the hatred is pretty much inverted snobbery & jealousy and/or distaste for such unoriginal purchasing decisions.
Same could be said for Howies, Santa Cruz, Habitat etc...

I'd still struggle to buy a Skoda over a VW.
It's why Vauxhall struggle some in the UK, even with a great line up of cars, brands mean different things to different peoples in different countries & age comes into play too. Remember Talbot cars, or when MG lent their name to Montegos, Maestros and Metros?

I find I tend not to particularily look at who made the frame if I pass someone on another bike - more what forks, tyres, brakes etc. are fitted.

Still such a MTBer thing to do - they're only worth speaking to if their bike passes the glance test.
Brand awareness is key, which is why we all buy what we buy and don't buy what we don't buy. It's all lifestyle association and projection, however much we pretend it isn't.

I agree up to a point, but with cars I think there's something in it. I suspect that how people perceive the status of their car relative to others does directly affect their behaviour. They really do think they are more important and drive accordingly. It's ridiculous playground behaviour that's probably present in a lot of places, but like a lot of other things it's magnified when it comes to cars- people behave in a way they probably (hopefully!) wouldn't dream of in other situations.
It's an extension of the way a lot of drivers treat cyclists, just further along the scale.
What OMITN. Some stuff just gets a reputation because the way it's marketed is targeted in a certain way. I expect to the people who ride them, the like of DMR and Identiti are hard-wearing affordable brands with a good grasp of what their users need. To me however their advertising says

I actually drive a Skoda, and it's genuinely a good car. They are just like VWs were 10-15 years ago - functional, solid, unfussy, reliable. Now VWs are just that bit too polished and plush for my liking - they've lost sight of their roots, or maybe they simply let their Skoda brand take that part of the market.
Anyway - what you do notice when you drive a Skoda is that no matter how fast you drive someone will try and overtake you, regardless of the situation. Bunch of cocks. I end up with a kind of inverse snobbery feeling of superiority, not dissimilar to the pleasure I get from knowing my 2005 Stumpjumper is every bit as good as the next guy's Nicolai/Turner/Whatever, despite the dumb remarks about it being the Mondeo of mountain bikes.

I object to the "IT" bit - the rest is about right. And does the fact that the built up On-One is SS make it worse? Probably
And VW deliberately make four versions of the same car - Cheap Skoda, Cheap sporty Seat, Luxury/Luxury sporty Audi, and Don't offend anyone mid-market VW.
Thus one basic design covers off more of the market without too much overlap leading to Skoda stealing VW sales or vice versa.
