So in light of my recent TOPIC on Avid Elixir R's, it a straight fight to the death which would you pick - Elixir R's or SLX.

And any other contenders in that kind of price range?

Putting a V in a brake question, which turns out to be about discs is confusing

Only if you don't understand that V's is an abbreviation of versus

V's is an abbreviation of V is.

vs. is an abbreviation of versus.

re. original question, I'd go Avid.

Shimano every time. More reliable, and easier to bleed.

I don't think i'll ever use Avids after working on some hire bikes a few years ago- awful things!

I've heard exlirs can go a bit funny over time, but shimano FTW.

Magura can be added, any to be found at decent prices, similar to Elixir's?

Best place for XT's out there?

I've got XTs and Elixir 5s. I'm considering changing the Elixir 5s for another set of XTs when funds allow, so I'd vote for XT (or maybe SLX, but I'm not sure what the differences are).

Having worked on my own XT and SLX's, and some Hopes and Avids last weekend on the 'puffer, I'd never fit Avids. What a complete PITA to work on, especially in the cold/dark/mud of an endurance event. In fact, the design of them contributed to an extra hour on one lap, with the rider walking out carrying the bike. Not good. Hopes were much simpler, but still needed a wee bleed once the pads had been changed - possibly due to the bike being upside down. Shimano every time for my money. XT or SLX, not much in it - but SLX are a nicer price.

Well I'll stick with what I've got (SLX) and save for some XT's then me thinks

XT must be due a redesign sometime soon.

Really like my set, but would love them if they had a split clamp and were a bit lighter.

I agree with this sentiment. Much as I like my BB7s, changing pads at the 'Puffer costs time and places.

If I was buying hydraulic, I'd buy top loading like XT and accept that I would have to chuck them when they got past it.

But if I ever do another muddy 'Puffer, the drum brakes are going on. (Used them in 1 'Puffer and no wear, no adjustment needed). The laptime may be fractionally slower, but if you have to change 3 sets of pads yourself as a solo rider, you'll probably be faster overall on drums.

"XT must be due a redesign sometime soon"
should be due middle of this year for 2012 XT? (Given 2011 was XTR)

I'm tempted to get some Elixir R's atm
Going by the claims of shimano and shimano, elixir R's are 67g (per end) lighter than SLX
