[Closed] BPW how likely to have your bike stolen?

Off to bpw soon, will be taking 4 bikes and leaving 2 disassembled in the back of the car chained to seat runners and covered.
I have heard some stories about theft and broken windows, but assuming I get there really early and park next to the cafe, how likely is trouble?

If they're covered and chained you'd be pretty unlucky

Most people leave them outside against the window/racks for the whole of lunch.

Actually, the leaving outside on the racks thing I found slightly concerning. It's the easiest way to have your bike nicked, as they could walk up, wheel it off and cycle it down the hill to a waiting vehicle

I locked mine to a rack using a simple extending cafe style cable lock for peace of mind

It's also a 3rd world country.

Whilst you book in? have lunch? Overnight car park in Merthyr?

To clarify 2 DH bikes will be left in the car all day whilst I ride there. They wont be needed until I'm at another location the next day.
Its just the being parked in the bpw car park all day that concerns me.
And yes it was the comments in another thread that got me worried .. ๐Ÿ™‚

The reason they get nicked is people leaving them unsecured and unattended in the car park.

Get there early and get a prime parking spot would be my advice.

Why risk breaking into a car when you could just pick one up from the rack outside the cafe and pedal it off. Downhill. In a far quicker time than it would take you to put down your frappe mocha latte chino and 1/2lb burger and run after the little shite.

Is it a 26er? If so it'll be safe, nobody wants those.

Sounds like a good excuse to buy a van, eh?

They will be fine locked in a car, there is always a few people tinkering with their enduro rigs in the car park all day long. Way too many people around for someone to risk breaking into a car
Overnight in a hotel car park however....personally I wouldn't risk it, but that extends to anywhere not just Merthyr

OP was concerned about bikes being visible.

But you must have read that?

Indeed. Much as I would like a van the speed limits, higher tax & insurance put me off. (But mainly the speed limits)

I dont see where he said that he was concerned about them being visible, only that he was concerned about theft.
If someone is prepared to break into a car parked at a trail centre, then I dont think the thief would be deterred from breaking into a van either.

When I was there last month I told the lad on the desk I was leaving my DH bike in my van with no windows while we rode, he told me it wasn't worth the risk and locked it up with the hire bikes behind the work shop. I'd probably do that rather than leaving it in the car at least then there may be insurance cover.

My brother had a big off and we had to cart him off to A&E. My mate strapped my bike to his car in the meantime and we drove off leaving said car in the car park. I was in a fluster and let him take care of it. We came back about 5 hours later in the dark and I saw what he'd done! Bike was still attached to the car in an empty car park. Maybe I was lucky? This was a bank holiday weekend last year. I would have thought it would be prime time to steal some bikes.

Not sure you haven't got the cart before the horse there.

I have not personally left a bike un attended there, however I did have a customer call regarding getting 3 bikes chained together lifted from his van whilst he was riding the DH bike along with his mates. His bike was an XL Transition Bandit, he was asking me about a replacement.

Speed limits in a van? Why no matter what speed you go in the outside lane there is always a white van right up your backside?
