I thought I was running 20 psi in both tyres, but apparently I’ve only got 14 psi in them!!! Now I’m worried I will immediately die on the next ride.

Definitely, A well deserved, retrospectively applied death will befall you! I'm certainly not buying such an instrument of the devil to check the accuracy of my cheap Halfords track pump lest a similar fate awaits me.

Well yeah, so quick, pump 'em up.
You will have to check every ride now. Maybe a spreadsheet for different tyres, temps, trails. It's a slippery slope.....

Have you got a torque wrench?

I got one of those but couldn't get the gauge on without it letting air out - could be that? 🙂

You need mine that always says 6psi regardless of how much air you put in / let out. Think I might need to buy a new one.

Mine agrees with my Joe Blow as far as I can tell.

I've doubled up on mine, got a topeak smarthead digital gauge and a joe blow pro digital pump.

I don't dare check them against each other....

I've got the same one, and when I used it on a group ride people were amazed at how low the readings were. Said it was broken. However it agrees almost exactly with my JoeBlow and Topeak shock pump, so it's at least brand-consistent.

Either way, the actual accuracy is less important than consistency. I just find what works for me and repeat. Whether the 14 is actually a 20 doesn't really matter too much.

They are also good for checking the car tyres without going to the garage and spending money.

I had one for cross and thought it was the bollox, but it didn't last unfortunately - a year and it was broken. Saw its fair share of mud and sealant, mind.

I thought it was maybe prone to under-reading - or perhaps my thumb needs re-calibrating. Would race 20, 21 psi in heavy conditions and the tires felt firmer than I would expect for what to me are extrmely low pressures.

There's certainly a knack.

Is it the Topeak D2? I bought one a couple of weeks ago and was also surprised that my 25 psi tyres (according to my cheap Aldi track pump) were coming in at 19 psi on the Topeak.

I measured again with a friend's cheap digital gauge and it came up with the same 19 psi so I'm quite happy with the accuracy.

I love my topeak D2, one of the most handy bits of kit I have bought.

As above, consistency/repeatability is key rather than 100% accuracy. I know much lower than 27psi (according to my gauge) on my front tubed tyre and I'm in pinch flat territory.

Also as above, there is a knack - it doesn't lock on so you have to quickly bang it on square so you don't lose air.

ive got an old oxford digital one. Had it for years and it still appears to be accurate. however i do fancy getting something newer so would one of these topeak ones be an upgrade?

Hard to say really if your old one is consistent and reliable.

Downsides to the D2 are

Doesn't lock on, so you have to put it on straight and quick and hold it in place.
Dunno how it copes with tyre sealant, might be potential for gumming it up if using the pressure release button.

Other than that it's a really good bit of kit.

Not sure if it's an upgrade. I have the topeak d2 and it's very easy to use, especially with the bleed button. Probably gets through 2 batteries a year. Robust too. Mine has seen plenty of drops. Decent functional kit is how I view it.

One of those manual dial ones without batteries would be nice upgrade.
