[Closed] Bottom Bracket/Front mech help

Hi folks

New to this forum so go easy on me

I've one of those E type front mechs that is worn out and needs swapping and I probably need to get hold of new chainset/BB too as I had a crank come loose a couple of times and now the whole thing sounds like a box of spanners

(there's a visible mark on both the BB splines and the crank ... tried cleaning greasing refitting etc.. no good so I am figuring they are trashed and it looks like I need to shell out for new BB and cranks)

Question is do I try to replace what is there(E type mech and ISIS BB) or just swap to a mech which mounts on the downtube and go for a Hollowtech II BB/chainset...any recommendations?

Cheers

Norb

Personally, I'd for get ISIS if I were you.

If you're on a budget, a Deore Hollowtech 2 is £50 at CRC here -

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40496

And that includes a BB, but you might need the tool to fit the BB cups, but it's very easy to do

And a Deore front mech is under £20. If possible I'd go for a seat tube mounted one. Be aware that you might need a low clamp (Top swing) mech if it's a suspension bike to clear the moving parts, but standard (Bottom swing) ones tend to last longer.

If you want to spend more, go for SLX or XT 🙂

What bike is it for?

Some bikes have e-type mechs for clearance, and because the usual down tube mount isn't an option. Agree with PP about external BB chainset, but I'd be inclined to swap like for like on the front mech

Cheers PP

Cannondale Gemini 1000, getting on a bit but still going well (apart from this!)...

Setup is for cable routing from underneath at the mo, and no there isn't a whole bunch of space to clear the swingarm etc. so I guess a top pull job is the way to go. It has LX on at the mo so the equivalent isn't too pricey...

Agreed on the ISIS, it has been crud... is HT II any better???

is HT II any better???

depends who you talk to, but with new bearings for a fiver (ignoring the do not dismantle sticker) and a quick google on how to change em, its not the end of the world design.

I've read that you need to get your BB shell faced if you go HT II is that right?... or is it a case of install it and see how it goes before going down that route?

As is always the case a small job soon becomes a much larger and more expensive one 😕

so I guess a top pull job is the way to go

Be careful not to get your 'pulls' and 'swings' mixed up!

Pull refers to where the cable come from: Under the BB is bottom pull, from the top tube is top pull

Now, confusingly, a normal style front mech which has the clamp above the cage is a BOTTOM SWING and a mech where the clamp sits below the cage is a TOP SWING

And no matter what the 'swing' is, the 'pull' can come from top or bottom.

Got that? 😉

but I'd be inclined to swap like for like on the front mech

Given it's a decent suspension bike, yes, so would I. Because you can guarnatee it'll work with minimum faffage. There's plenty e-type mechs around and they're not much different price-wise.

Very easy to mount with HT2 as well, you just leave out a spacer on the drive side. 🙂

Yup PP... thanks... I'd twigged that one.. just got me pulls and me swings mixed up... I knew what I was thinking... just typed it differently..if only I could type as quickly as I was thinking... 😳

Agreed re the e-type mech.. does makes things easier... only managed to find an XT one for £35 on CRC so far... (not looked too hard as yet I admit!) anywhere else worth checking before I press?

Not really, XT is pretty much going to last as long as you've got the bike TBH, fit and forget

There's an SLX e-type if you look a bit deeper -
