I was looking at spacers, i think i need a 4.5mm one for the above, but i thought that it would be likely that this could be bodged. Any experience of this?

It used to be a standard piece when 8spd hubs first came out.

Your LBS may still have one in the parts bin.

Otherwise try SS spacers.

Try using a sprocket spacer or two, the ones that live between the loose sprockets.
