Need a cheap powerful light that won't explode on me. Not that bothered about long battery life as rides will be no more than 1.5hrs. The on one's look decent value, can anyone confirm with real world experience? Or eBay/Amazon equivalents? Had a small magishine mj 890 which was ace but the mount was made of cheese. Very reliable though apart from that 🙂
Thanks
Halfords jobber look decent for the money. All in one aswell so no wires and batteries to strap to the frame .
Get the Evolva X8 (or clone) off of Amazon.
Miles better.
Edit.
My post on another thread:
Depending on what you’re coming from it’s either brilliant not not that good.
I have one but it’s going back, as it isn’t as bright as my Evolva X8’s – the 1st gen ones with the crappy mount and tripod thread in the bottom. It’s not as heavy and I haven’t tested the claims on battery life (X8’s allege 4h on full)
The Bobby 30W is supposedly 3000Lm – in a side-by-side with an X8 in a darkened room, even on mid setting, the X8 (supposed 1200Lm for 1st gen) seems brighter, and on full, it’s way brighter.
Beam pattern-wise, they look similar at 5m as a round spot, rather than elliptical. I know this isn’t an ideal test and won’t tell you if it’ll blind oncoming traffic, but I don’t want to take it out on the trail and muck it up if I’m returning it.
As for the bracket, there’s a plastic dovetail wedge on the bottom secured by 2 screws. This slides into the bar mount which tightens with a thumbscrew and will fit std, 31.8mm (and possibly 35mm without a rubber sleeve) bars. One of the reasons for it’s return is that I prefer the tripod-thread mounts as they are easy to get GoPro adaptors for and fit on my Super 2R.
Ultimately, for me, it’s not as good as the X8 (which is really good for £40-60 depending on branding on Amazon), but I think it would certainly do as a gravel bike light.
I now have various reflectors/collimators from LEDDNA on the way to try and get more of a flood from the X8’s
Oh you've gone and done it again.
Any mention of an onone product an Brant will appear to [s]promote[/s] helpfully answer questions.
I don’t really understand why our £21-£34 lights are being compared to “£40-£60” lights.

Yes tbf my idea of cheap may be different to others.. I was thinking 25 quid ish.

That looks like a steal to be fair

Yeah. More expensive light is better, shocker. Having ridden off-road (including iditabike) with a 4w petzl headtorch it does tickle me what people consider essential.
Never mind turning a blind eye to corporations that structure their financial position to avoid paying uk taxes at the level that might be expected based on revenues and reasonable margins.
I'm ordering one based on that reply. Chuckle 😂
Just got two of the Bobby three degrees twin LED lamps. Very bright. Quite lightweight. Happy with the £20 each.
Getting a little fed up with the battery pack plus lamp, so these should save some bar space.
I bought a Bobby 3 degrees to try out/use as a back up - it’s not as good as my Gloworm XS (but why should it be?) but it’s great for the cash - the mount could be a little sturdier but it doesn’t move around on the trails - I think I paid £23 posted for it and for the money you can’t go wrong
Not used mine in anger yet, but lots of light for the money
Thanks guys. I must say that I take my hat off to on one/planet X. Had numerous frames, wheels, bits over the years and they do exactly what they say on the tin. Properly priced and functional stuff. My on one 456 summer season still ranks as my fave hardtail I've owned. We can't all splash 400 quid on a set of lights, places like on one, superstar, uberbike etc have kept me riding over the years when otherwise I might not have afforded to. Much love 😂 ✌🏾
I really like the look of these lights and my old (2008?) Spokeshirts light has just started going a bit intermittent...
But, the thing putting me off is the brightness options for the lights.
The 3000 one would be great from a runtime point of view, if it had an intermediate output level....if it was 3000, 1000 and 400 lumens I'd probably get one.
It also looks like you have to cycle through flashing mode to go from low to high, which is OK but a bit of a pain.
Pah, having said that I still might give one a whirl as a stopgap if I can't find something else suitable.
Alternatively, light marketed as 3000Lm (for £39.99, plus another £3.99 p&p when I ordered one) not as good (for me, for multiple reasons) as a light marketed as 1200Lm for £40. Had I not had the X8 to compare directly against, I'm sure it would have been more than adequate for mincing about Chopwell and Hamsterley.
As for the tax thing, I guess I'm just a **** like everyone else who orders tat from eBay/Amazon like the OP asked about.

Flashing mode is the least of your worries 😂
That says more about you than the light mate.. seems pretty easy to me 😂. And you bought a part bike light, part camping light so what did you expect?
What I was expecting was the usual Planet X lottery of either splendid bargain or bonkers tat, and on that front I certainly wasn't disappointed 🙂

I was admittedly hoping that it might have a separate button for the blinding light that points directly up at your face. But like I say, it's a lottery, I took a punt. I'm a moth to the flame of bargain-basement rebranded sweepings from discarded Chinese shipping containers 🙂

My job largely involves designing things that are understandable and work the way people want them to, so… yes 😉

Ah, that one looks like the Three Degrees, rather than the specific bike light that I mentioned (although that does seem like a strange way of getting the 'camping light' bit to come on). This one:
https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/LIJOBBD30W/jobsworth-bobby-dazzler-30w-3000-lumen-front-light
only has the front lights.
Cateye volt500 xc.
'only' 500 lumens but it's just as bright as the 3 billion lumen ebay jobbies, and no seperate cables, USB rechargeable.
Only downside is it has a rubber ring mount, so you need to put a smol bit of tape on your bar to give it some grip so it doesn't slide down.

Indeed.
And to be fair, it's a ludicrous bargain in terms of spec and at £20 it's barely worth my time posting it back. I might not.
It just baffles me that so many lights have such hopeless user interfaces. And I don't just mean the cheap ones: even stupidly expensive lights could generally do it better. (This one just happens to be the most absurd by way of having to go blind if you want to change modes.)
I miss the old Lumicycle approach, to be honest. Two beams, each with a toggle switch. Changing modes was easy and obvious, with no interim unwanted modes, and it'd even do the thing I want from a light, which is to be instantly on/off at the flick of a switch so I can use it as a main beam alongside a StVZO dyno light. I'm not aware of a decent compact light which works like that these days.
I have the £20 version with the cob light you can just hold down the button to turn the light off without going through all the modes.
I notice all the ebay versions of the 30w one list it as 1500 lumens...

I still miss my old Smart lamps 2.4w flood and 10w spot with a spare 240 000kg lead acid battery in my camel back!!
I had a BLT light (big water bottle Lead Acid) that had a whopping 2.4w of light and cost £70 about 25 years ago, seemed loads compared to what you could get - used to commute on pitch black country lanes with it.
I've got a mix of various Chinese 'headlamps', but I changed the battery packs for Pannovo cases and high quality cells. Thing is, there is still a battery pack and wires to mount ! Perfectly happy with the cheap Bobby's. I also have a C&B Seen City Slicker - that's a heavy self contained light.
I recon the Bobby 'twin' kicks out about 1200 real lumen - that's more than enough, as it seems similar output to the C&B Seen and my Yinding 2xU2
The COB would be handy for trail side repairs - that's why I opted for it. Lots of broad spread light.
I notice all the ebay versions of the 30w one list it as 1500 lumens…
I think they are actually listed as 15,000
Nope 1500. Which makes more sense when you work out the battery capacity and runtimes. An XML led puts out about 1000 lumens at 3 amps. So a decent 18650 could put out 1000l for 1 hour. It would need three of these to get near the 3000l and it only has two. Simply not possible.
Underdriven at about 500l per led fits with the runtimes etc.
aluminium foil tape over the face melting death ray and this could be a good light.. until the foil tape catches fire.

I found a mint boxed but not working (battery wouldn't charge) set of them in my attic last year, stuck them on Ebay for 99p & they made £68!

Bloody hell, I dont miss them that much!!!
