I know little about BMX bikes only ever MTB but son wants a "road bike" (BMX) for when we are not in the woods.

He has a hotrock 20 which is perfect size with the seat up a few inches. He is about 130cm tall. So what wheel size would he be suited to and what to look for.

He has birthday and xmas in the same week so he has managed a bike a few times (Second hand)

Any tips appreciated.

He will probably be better off on an 16 or 18" wheel BMX like these-

Not sure how often they come up second hand though vs normal 20" wheeled BMX's. Depends I guess whether he just wants to ride to school on it, or actually pull some rad moves.

Agree with Steve above, 20" BMXs are a lot harder to manage for little kids than a 16 or 18" BMX

Something like this would be great

Thanks, He has had sit down on one in Halfords and he looked like Peter Fonda in Easy rider, do the smaller wheeled versions have smaller bars?

He wants to learn basic tricks- manual, wheelie & bunny hop. The hotrock feels like it has an anvil on the front and he struggles to get front of the ground.

There is one of each of the United Recruit on ebay.

16" or 18"?

From the CRC link it says 16" for 5-8 and 18" for 9-12 so depends whether you want it to fit him now but he might grow out of it soon, and if he is at the upper end for height for his age.

The other option of course, is to see if there's a local BMX race club around where he can go along and borrow a junior race bike. Sessions at the track with coaching will be gold for kids his age and nothing will improve his manualling, pumping etc like riding a track. There are bikes dedicated for racing at all age ranges that will fit him but they are different to the 'freestyle' type of bikes that have already been posted.

yup - smaller than 20" for that age. He'll be able to pedal but not much else.

Cool. See if there's a gate practise session where you can go down and borrow a bike and helmet. Plus you might want to ask about borrowing one for your son as well 😀
