I'm having problems bleeding Shimano SLX M665 brakes. Since I've shortened the hoses I cannot get a good bleed. I take the pads out, fit the yellow bleed spacer and bleed until the lever is rock hard. I then replace the resevoir cap, refit the pads and adjust the lever reach. And then I get loads of lever travel, almost back to the bar. I'm using Weldtite mineral oil.

What am I doing wrong??

Assuming you're bleeding them correctly, then it sounds like air is getting in.

I have wondered that. But it happens almost instantly and then doesn't get any worse. I can still ride the bike. The brakes just lack the sharpness they had before I shortened the hose. Plus there are no signs of mineral oil leaking

I had similar, got the lbs to do it. They mentioned about bleeding it from the caliper as well as the lever.

I was a mechanic in bike shops for over 8 years. I am too proud to go the lbs! I'm completely baffled by this. It's as if the pads are slightly spongy?!

Are you sure the pads are pushed firmly back into the pistons before starting the bleed? It's quite easy get air stuck in the calliper, I've removed the brake assembly from the bike before and bled them while in a work stand simply to allow the calliper to be manipulated during the bleed. As suggested above, bleed in both directions as well.

Not seen that video before, buts thats basically what I do. Only differnece is he is readjusting the reach before closing the reservoir.

I did notice though that he has loads of travel before the brakes come on. Is that normal for Shimano discs? (I've not had a great deal of experience with Shimano discs as they weren't made when I was in the bike shop). Mine were never like that when new.
