I've had great success with one of the ebay non-official avid bleed kits.

Does de-gassing the fluid before starting the bleed really make any difference?

Has anyone bled any other brakes using "de-gassed" fluid? I'll try it on my Hopes next time I bleed them (if I can remember / be bothered) to see if any magic happens.

I have no data to say whether it makes a difference or not but it can't hurt. I de-gas before beleeding my Hope brakes now (or anything else for that matter).

Considering the first thing you do once you've connected the syringes is to suck a shed load of air bubbles through it, i can't see it making that much difference, especially as you'll effectively be de-gassing it every time you pull the syringe. As above, won't do any harm though.
