[Closed] Bikes you don't need but have and won't sell

Currently have 6 bikes, and xc full suss, a carbon roadie, a cx bike, a down hill bike, a trail bike, and a single speed. Of these I use the first three, the others get no use whatsoever despite the downhill and trail bike being great speced bikes.

Take the trail bike for example, it's an almost brand new trance, the upgraded forks, brakes and dropper have never even been used, yet its only going  to get at most a dozen outings a year as the xc bike can cover 90 %*of the riding I do. The downhill bike will get even less.

Thing is (before you scream stealth ad) I won't sell them as I reckon I'd miss them on the few occasions I fancy that kind of riding. It would obviously be far cheaper to sell and rent on the occasions I need to, however this just doesn't appeal.

Half the joy appears to be owning the bike, rather than riding it. .

Anyone else feel the same or am I the only idiot on here?

My first 'proper'-ish mtb, a Kona Lava Dome from 1997. I use it as a commuter. I have had other commuters that were better, nicer, that I've sold to keep the Kona, but there is an idiotic sentimental attachment to it and the bloody thing just won't die.

My rocket. It's so nice but 80% of my riding is either commuting or my longitude is better suited. Keep it just for the summer and bigger trips.

1988 Kona Explosif. My old race bike, from when I used to indulge in that sort of masochism.

Worth next to nothing, and nothing is original except the frame and forks. I still use it and, apart from missing disc brakes, it’s still pretty capable.

Or maybe I am...

This one. Never ride it, although I'm tempted to lob it in the car for some evening park-pootling when away with  work.

I've got a mk1 DMR sidekick that was built from cast offs, 'for my wife'. It's been ridden less than 10 times, the forks I built it with are buggered, the groupset is feeling apart, and the cracks are knackered.

But it was a frame i'd always wanted since it was first launched, it's running my mk1 Bulbs, and it's just, well, it's the shiznit.

I'm hardly ever going to use it, but I'm still hovering over the buy button for new forks and groupset...

A Bontrager Race OR with a set of Pace RC39's (fitted after finally giving up on the offset crown Judy's).

First thing I bought with my first proper pay check 🙂 Truth is I haven't ridden it in two years but there is just something inherently lovely about skinny tubed retroness

Mk1 Bird Aeris:- Only gets used when it’s dry or races. Not because I baby it but I keep it indoors hanging in the stairwell and cba cleaning it every time I use it.

Turner RFX/5spot:- I really have no need for this but it’s proper triggers broom. 1999 Horst rear end with a later 5spot front end. Mk1 Bulb hubs on D521s and Z1s. Also if I fancy a change all the parts fit my Kona Steely Frame

Saracen Aerial:- Barely use it as the Bird does most things better, however I quite like it and hate it at the same time. Also handy it’s a 26er.

Genesis IO:- Currently does most of my riding and lives in my work van.

Merlin PR7:- does the rest of my riding.

Need? No. Sell? No. Just wear them out and consign them to the heap of worn out bikes.

Cove Hummer means so much to me , fashion decrees it's worthless but the memories associated with it are priceless.

The fixie that hasn't even been outside is definitely surplus to requirements (I did use it on rollers for a while when I was training for something, but I'm too feeble to honk it over the local hills), and the tricycle and the unicycle, I'm not entirely certain why I have those at all, they just sort of turned up. The BMX doesn't get used much nowadays either. None of them are worth much and they're not taking up space anywhere the missus usually goes, so they'll stay for now.  The turbo-trainer cellar-gimp bike doesn't even have brakes on it so that doesn't count at all. The new CX bike is here for a specific reason later on this year and will probably get sold on or parted up after that I suspect. The other CX bike is basically just a road/gravel bike now, and you've got to have something with curly bars. You can have my three MTBs when you pry them out of my cold dead hands, actually do I really only have three MTBs, hmm. That's not enough, might have to build up a hardtail or singlespeed or something, damnit, look what you've done, happy now?

I bought a cube ams130 fs bike in 2012, i must have done 600 miles on it since.

great bike, works perfectly and look new, but it’s a 26er, and i have several newer bikes that are more suitable for the majority of my riding, so it hasn’t been ridden for two years.

feel sad about it, but im not throwing away the £1600 I spent on it, id rather ride it once every couple of years and enjoy that.

GT STS in the loft, use it rarely due to snappage risk, but it looks awesome.

Got a transition bandit that gets used rarely too but makes me smile so much when it does come out that I can't sell it.

The other ones are used relatively frequently, except the road bike but then that's worth bugger all so no point selling it

Nothing for me. If it's not being ridden I usually get rid of it. No sentiment in a bike.

Bought a racy geo road bike in 2006, which was fine to ride until my lower back went two years later, then barely used it despite getting a high angle stem to raise the front end. Kept hoping that my lower back would improve enough to ride it regularly again, which it finally did by about this time last year... Only in the years inbetween I'd had my RTA and lost all confidence in rim brakes, so sold it for pennies!

IBIS Mojo and IBIS Tranny don't get much use since the fatbike came along but I haven't the heart to part with them..

Kona Ute, I've nearly sold it twice (via here) only to baulk at the last minute (sorry!).  If anyone ever sees me trying to sell it in the future do me a favour and ignore the ad.  Too many great rides with the kids and happy memories. Tempted to go 27.5+ for a bit more cushion and we only really do off road on it bar a run to the village shop.

I’m like you OP in that my Anthem does 90% of my riding. Doesn’t stop me hankering after a long travel burley bike for the odd lakes trip!

98 Kona Hanna that was my brother's, too good to go in the skip so it's "saved" for when one of my kids are big enough to ride it and the occasional summer pootle.

14" inbred that the wife rides on 2-3 summer pootles, yet is in the best, easiest spot in the shed to encourage her to get out on it.😆

456ebb - my minimum maintenance igh, that I don't get time to ride.

Merida transmission lrs, need to spend a fortune to get it going again which would be better served on pretty much anything else.

2005 Turner 6 pack. Fantastic bike but would only fetch buttons now. Not worth selling despite not riding it.

My R5ca sits on a hanger unused for 18mths and my TCXAdv1 hangs next to it unused for 12mths.

I doubt I will sell either, but they sure do look mighty sad with flat tyres and running gear hanging off them..

My steel fatbike. Since getting a plus hatdtail I’ve not ridden it at all. I was saving it for snow, however I keep timing tattoos with snow so can’t ride it.

My 2007 (ie. post Chris Cocalis, pre On One) Titus Eleven titanium hardtail. Full XTR (various generations), Pace carbon fork. Haven't touched it in the last five years or so (gone dark side), unless to dust off. And to remove and sell the Chris King wheelset (replaced with a much cheaper wheelset).

I know 26" is dead, but I will NOT give it away for peanuts.

My Keewee Chromo 8 - it's been on the wall in the garage since I got back from my last Morzine trip which I think was 2011 but it's not worth financially what it is sentimentally and hence I doubt I'll ever sell it.  I don't really care if it doesn't perform quite as well as the latest greatest carbon DH wonderbike, it's good enough for me and I can't wait to get out on a Morzine trip with it and my lad in a few years if he ever gets into riding proper.  It'll make a quite a decent little restomod project I reckon. ;o)
