Am I missing something obvious here (standing by for having done so)? I'm trying to set up a bikepacking set up on a road bike with Shimano cable shifters (with the cables coming out the end of the brake/shit levers) and am struggling to get a dry bag strapped to the bars without squishing the gear cables. Any bag recommendations? Is it simply a matter of getting a bag that fits in between the bars and the cables? Something like this maybe.

Yes, they are a pain.

You might get something smaller to fit if it's in a harness of some sort which can sit below bar height and it'll then likely require longer cables so that they can go over the front of the bag.

Once you go up to the higher end shifters, the problem goes away.

Wider and/or flared bars help, especially when trying to use the brakes when on the drops.

Ah that's annoying. I'll have to experiment then!
