Bike trailer too close to the rear wheel - how to sort?

[#13516286]

I have an Edinburgh Bike Co-op trailer that tandemjeremy which has two arms that clip to special quick release skewer ends like this (not my photo):

It looks like this:

It works OK with a 700x35 wheel but I'd like to start using it on my 29er MTB. Unfortunately, the two arms aren't long enough to reach the QR axle without touching the tyre. Is there any way to extend the arms, or an alternative mounting solution that anyone can think of? There are no pannier mounts on the frame.

Think you're going to have to get the frame modified to extend the reach and increase the clearance.  Probably easiest by extending the end plates.  If it's steel you just need to find a decent fabricator.

It it had been a genuine 'Bob' trailer, then you'd be able to buy the correct sized yoke...

...having said that, a 29er compatible yoke may fit in your trailer - not sure how you can find out, though.

Can you not bolt a small piece of steel plate on using existing holes in the yoke, having drilled the new plate to take the axel first?

^^^that was my first thought, but IIRC, those bolts hold a hook/ mechanism which captures the axle studs and prevents it bouncing off.  Any new bracket adaptor would need to remount this mechanism further forward.  You might still be able to do something like this with some bent steel pieces - 2 per side to do this, but not sure how well that would fit the axle.

+1 on a fabricator with steel and welder could sort that easily.

Rectangular tubing that fits over the stays.

Cut all 4 stays.

Sleeve them an inch either side  and weld.

It ain't pretty and is irreversible

Trying to make extensions at the axle -by design of the axle interface going to result in poor resistance to rotational load on the fittings you do use. There isn't alot of area for a new interface

Make the bike a mullet with a 650b rear wheel would give a bit more space. Would probably be fine if it's for a shopping bike or to see whether it worked as hoped. Possibly not so great if you're heading off on a long tour. Could always borrow a wheel to try it.
