The commuter bike I lost in the recent theft from my back garden was a 2012 Saracen Studio Urban 74, which originally retailed for £650.

This year's model seems to retail for a lot less, however, and I am wondering if, when it is appraised by the insurance company, they should take account of what a £650 bike would cost to replace, or if they will just look at this year's model of the same bike and give me less.

In any case, what would account for a newer version of the same bike being worth less than one 4 years older?

They'll probably get Wheelies to quote for them, who will give you a generous amount which they'll pressure you into spending via them.

You're too smart to fall for that though - after all the tales of godawful service from us suckers who did and had warranty issues.

Cheaper entry level components.
For example most entry level bikes used to come equipped with Sora and in some cases Tiagra. Now Sora is often not seen until 2nd or 3rd model up the range.
