Under 500£ hardtail for someone that just about now tries to get into mtb.

Looking at an Altitude 00 2009 for 475£ or a 440£ Carera Fury which is now on sale... Which one or do you have any better suggestions?

Yes but I am having trouble finding anything decently specced for that kind of money anywhere. The Fury is 550 normally just has a 20% off. He does not like the curvy top tubes of the specs actually though so they are out really.

Depends a bit on what he wants it for... But I'd have the Fury, no doubt at all, better overall spec and the overall package is really nice. Cheap crankset is the only downer, that and the fact that they went with Juicy 3s instead of lovely, cheaper Tektro Auriga Pros this year for extra specsheet points 🙁

Seems a good price for the Genesis mind but not as good.

A second hand bike. If they're a beginner, a 2005 bike won't make any difference and they'll get better parts for the money.

Probably some good steeds on here.

get a fury, so much money for the bike, you may even get a grey 2009 one with the tora fork (better than the epicon imo) they're not a skinny racer but they are surprisingly versatile

check it over before you go out on it, the assembly skills of halfords staff are variable (mine were rubbish, some are decent)

Been looking for second hand bikes around here but nothing very suitable. There is a GT Avalanche quite upgraded for a decent price but my GT Aggressor - I think it is the same as the Avalanche- was heavy and never got on with it very well.

The 08 Fury is only 16" in Halfords at the moment and yes it looks better with Tora and Tektro brakes - HATE Juicy's had nothing but trouble with mine on the GT and Boardman, have XTs on my Anthem and am really happy. Will have to go and ask if they still have any 18" ones left.

£225 so you've got change to upgrade. Move quickly before someone recognises the bargain.

Oh, watch out, the £440 offer on the Fury looks like it ends tomorrow. Though there'll be another sale in a month no doubt, they're always doing that.

Herman we both are very mechanically challenged so that old a bike might not be ideal and he is a bit on the heavy side - 13 stones or there abouts so I don't know how I feel about a full susser of 2000. It is extremely tempting nonetheless.

Northwind yes I know he is getting a bike today really one way or the other. If he gets the fury he will be able to upgrade his forks anyway as I am giving him my Recon U-turns (got a pair of SIDs waiting to be put on the Anthem). Also I have a pair of nearly new Deore 2010 spec cranks which he will also have. So he will just really need to upgrade his brakes which we can defo find something around here.

Ok, I hear you. I recommend avoiding Halfords and going for either an independent shop or the bargainous wonders of; wiggle, crc, merlin cycles, jejames and stif (all are .co.uk I think). They stock more specialist stuff and therefore usually have the knowledge to go with it.

Good luck!

Too late now really 🙂 Fury bought. I bought my GT from them and I got decent service really. A couple of the guys there were very nice/good.

In any case I know of a very very good mechanic that built my Anthem and did an absolute brilliant job for next to nothing so if Halfords has issues servicing it I can rely on him.

Good to know as the Fury was my suggestion to him, together with a boardman and the Genesis Altitude. I guess he did choose a bad time to buy one anyway as there are no offers this time of the year, at least not anywhere near as many as are after August and till December.

Every time I have suggested a bike for a beginner mate they've never bought one. Perhaps its cos they're not really into it or that I scare them silly with the prospect of spending £500 on a bike.

I now let them find their own way like most of us probably did, with a £200 bike from the LBS to start with.

I was in a similar boat and got a Carrera. It appears to work.

People were selling almost identical Carrera bikes, and worse spec name brand bikes second hand for more money than I bought my Carrera for.

The downside is that you have to be confident you can fix loose bolts etc. yourself - don't expect it to be safe out of the shop and whatever you do, don't expect to be able to ride it home.

Cool-hand-luke: He bought the Fury so he trusts me lol And he had reservations for the 500£ price but after a bit of explaining he came round to it 🙂

JoeMarshal : I bought my GT from halfords and took it home and it was fine. A bit rubbing of the brakes but that never really went away. It was built ok actually and never needed much of a repair other than some mechs that got a little out of alignment and the Juicy brakes. As I said the guys that work in the Watford store - or at least a couple of them - seem competent enough.

Genesis we did go to two of them, none sold anything under the 500£ that appealed. A hardrock for 400£ was the only option in that price range but he does not like the curved top tubes of Specs. Also a 4300 Trek was within the price range but for the money it was well under-specced compared to the Carrera.
