Long term planning for next years Whistler trip, where we're going to fly out with our bikes using the cardboard  bike box and pipe lagging method and hire a car out there. Haven't flown with bikes before having driven to previous alps trips.

How well do two standard cardboard bike boxes fit into cars? Would two boxes fit into say a ford focus or are you looking at a people carrier? Or I guess the other option is to take the bikes out and fold the boxes down first, but chucking two dismantled bikes into the back of a hire car while jetlagged doesn't sound too fun.

I've looked at buying a soft box ala planet x or crc but heard they don't provide any support and cause the majority of bike breakages.

Also are all bike boxes a set dimension or does it vary massively dependent on brand?

Certainly not a feature of the evoc bags!!

Bike boxes are generally a bit bigger than bags but I've managed to get them into Corolla, possibly get 2 bags in that one, depends on your box.

Anything mondeo range one will probably sit across the back seats but your best bit would be a regular estate car or something like a forrester, Xtrail, Rav4 will do 2 sensible boxes

Had two in a 75,if that helps, not massive by estate standards. Could only two take two people though.

Also had two in a Ford Falcon estate and two in a Toyota Previa.

Had one in a Yaris and an Aygo, just, and one in a Pulsar with room to spare.

North American cars tend to be a bit bigger than ours though, more like the Falcon I guess.
