[Closed] Bike Batman and Bike Index - fighting back against bike theft?

I read an article in The Gruaniad yesterday about Bike Batman who lives in Seattle and repatriates stolen bikes to their rightful owners. The article mentioned Bike Index - a website on which one registers their bike(s) to help trace them in the event of them being nicked.

Seems like a great idea but I'd never heard of it. I think from their website that they are USA only.
What's the STW take on this - is there something similar in the UK? If so, has anyone used/using it?
