Had my newly built up Marin B17 stolen from my shed last night along with lots of spares, 2 boxes of tools, wheelset and other odds and ends. Had only just finished building the bloomin’ thing on Monday and yesterday’s commute was literally the first/test ride.

Details:
Gold Marin B17 2006 Frame (m)
Maverick SC32 Forks
Easton Monkeylite SL bars
Avid Flak Jacket cabling so distinctive bright red outers stretching all the way along the down-tube.

Not content with that the cheeky ****ers also removed another pair of SC32s along with the front wheel off my wife’s bike too. @rseholes

I don't live that way but will keep a look out on net, having had my bike stolen before I know how you feel, I honestly hope the culprits die.

Cheers for the support guys. It's been a somewhat disturbing day trying to come to terms/piece everything together (not to mention rebuild my busted up shed!).

Lactic - I'm in St Thomas. It certainly has its moments on this side of the river!!

Cipher - I was driving in to the centre along Topsham Rd and I saw a young lad riding a B17 with triple clamp forks on tuesday morning - it was at the town end - Holloway St/Lansdown Terrace way. I only caught a glimpse, I was in traffic, he was riding out of town.
Bit late I know, but maybe if you went down that way you might strike lucky....

only just seen this.
that's a pretty distinctive build i'd imagine. will keep an eye out.
do you want to stick up an email addy in case it gets spotted?

young lad nearly walked off with my pompino from outside the 'locks last evening. i park it next to the conservatory so i can keep an eye on it from the bar. fortunately for him he just let it go when my mate fired out there, otherwise i fear he would have gone for swim!
think he was a bit 'special' TBH, and after i followed him around the corner found his mum, and 'left it in her hands'. the landlord called the plod though - said he wasn't prepared to put up with it.

Glad you kept your pompino.

the doubbollocks and the turf both have thousands of pounds of bikes in the gardens all summer; admittedly, most of them are only worth a fiver each 🙂

That's a ****er 😡 - I live out of that side of Exeter, so I'll keep an eye out.

Have you got the frame number, etc? and have you marked the parts in any way? Nowadays I mark the major bits of mine with a UV pen. Probably won't help, but who knows.

@ bassspine - It's not a new problem in Exeter though. I've had 2 nice bikes nicked over the last 10 years. Both from garages/sheds, so they've obviously seen me riding and checked the place out. The main problem is that they'll be split and the bits mixed together on other bikes as soon as possible. Both my bikes were spotted quite soon afterwards as frames with different components on, and then it's difficult to prove owt.

ajantom,

I fully agree, (I've been here for 20 years) any student city will be a comfy home for biketheives.

this is why part of my shed consists of this

OMG! Sorry for being so quiet - I didn't realise this thread was still alive!

Bassspine - Thanks for the heads-up re the B17 down Topsham Road way. I'm aware of some less than reliable folk in that neighbourhood (not all, I hasten to add). I'll be out on a scouting mission soon. In the meantime I've been busy spending a fortune upgrading the security in the shed (including shed-shackle etc!) and around the home in case the little ****ers ever try again 😉

I may have discovered at least one of the reasons why this is such a big problem in Exeter. In my recent experience the Police really don't give a $hit. I've not had any contact from them at all, they've not been to survey the scene or take evidence or statements and, in spite of getting the local Councilor involved, they've practically closed the investigation without ever starting it. Exeter is supposed to be a city that actively encourages cycling, but obviously the Police haven't got that message yet and instead treat bike theft as a joke. I've written to the local MP to see if we can get the political view of why this should be the case, so if anyone's interested I'll post the reply if/when I get it?

Thanks again to everyone for the support.
