The family holiday this year is just down the road from Betws-y-coed which is rather lucky. We are staying in a village called Dolwyddelan. This looks like it is quite close to the Penmacho trail - does anyone know if you can join it from the village?

Also anyone suggest any good hire shops so that my Dad can hire a bike?

Finally how difficult are the red trails? My dad wants to go along them. He reguarly rides so fitness isnt a problem it is just down the how technical it is. He goes along blue and green no prob so thinking as long as he takes it easy on some technical bits he should be ok. We are going midweek in October so I wouldnt expect it to be too busy!

Cheers

Getting across to Penmachno from dolwyddelan is not for the faint hearted....its a BIG ass climb!!TBH he'd be better off hiring from Beics Betws and doing the marin or if you want easy fun and the conveinience of a trail head cafe etc llandegla is just as close as cyb and a little less tech/intimidating.

You'll be on some good natural trails, like Elin's Revenge from
the Bikefax book on Snowdonia

The Marin has less single track so might work better. Penmacno is alot of single track (thats why people like it). But it means that althought it's rarely really hard also rarely really easy. I road it with a rider whose confidence went part way round and it was alot of walking for them.

He'll not struggle with any of them tbh.The red is diverted for felling at the mo (and may will be still when you go)but the black is'nt really regarded as being a true representation of a black graded trail anyway.
