If you can make it to wigan, alans bmx. Literally one of the biggest BMX mail orders/shops in the country.
Is the BMX for race or street/skatepark/dirt? They are very different for either.

I picked up a Haro 18 race bike for my 6yr old. Quite tidy and no real issues in spec. As Dean says, race or street?
There is always Winstanleys but they have a mixed rep.....

Kink Kicker 18. About £300. We've been very pleased with our Kink Whip and it certainly passed muster at school with knowing nods and lots of goes for friends! Your budget will get you a real bike that's not too heavy. As for shops, I'd hunt online. the link I gave is competitive.
