Best shoe for flat pedals on a road bike

I'm changing to flat pedals on my road bike to save my knees. What's the best shoe out there? I need something stiff and lightweight, no need for chunky protection like you get on mtb shoes. Any ideas?

I have Adidas Terrex Trail Cross shoes for road gravel and MTB. If dry I use an old pair of Adidas Terrex Solo (from when they had a stealth sole) but they have holes in the sole now from years of use. I think approach shoes can also work well if they have a stiffer sole. I use short pins on my pedals and that combination works well.

Thanks!

I've been looking at the Giro Latch and the Specialized 2fo Roost. The 2fo is edging it on price right now.

I also use approach shoes for long rides- they work great! Mine are quite heavy tho

I have and love 5.10 kestrels (boa). I went back to flats as I just couldn't get away with spds after having a knee replacement and it's been a great move.

Weird, the Kestrels on Wiggle are spd. I guess they do both versions?

I’m here for an answer. Most shoes don’t seem stiff enough for me. Currently I’m using scarps via ferrata shoes but sadly they are no longer made

I've bought a pair of these, half price at Sigma Sports. I'll update this thread when I get them! Doing a sportive next weekend so I guess that'll be a good test.

The Giro Latch are supposed to be stiffer

Freerider Pro are quite light and slim and stiff. Much less soft skate shoe than a Freerider and not chunkily armoured like an Impact.

Thanks for all your help! Those Fizik Versor shoes looked the best, but I had to go for the 2fo's as they had my size. They look chunky, which is less than ideal, but still lighter then most, and 400grams lighter than what I'm using right now! I'll let you know how I get on, hopefuly in the future someone will bring out a flat pedal shoe for us roadies with knackered knees

I've just changed to flats on my Diverge and use my Spesh 2FOs. They're not perfect, but I'm finding it a lot comfier than either spds or road spds. I also have wide feet (2e left, 4e right) so finding anything that fits is a whole other challenge.

I’ve just been using the same pair of Freeriders I use for MTB and a pair of Superstar Nanos. Just watch out for toe overlap with the front wheel.

Or what about using MTB SPD's? I find the extra float helps and I could never do proper road pedals/shoes. Just use the same shoes on and off road now. Usually spesh ones.

@fazzini how wide do the Spesh 2FOs come up ?

Been looking for some lighter flat shoes for when I’m on the road bike, as I just can’t get on with spds, but definitely need a wide fit.

Not got them but some of their leather boots and they are really well made and high quality leather. They are also a good company to deal with.
Those shoes, and similar more racy types, are just pretty much what everybody was using before Look pedals changed the face of pedals. If you’re too young to remember that, note that toe clips and straps work better with smooth soled shoes - certainly for getting your foot out!
