[Closed] Best places to live around gloucester

I'm getting bored living in London - no riding from my door and the chickens need some grass!

I have reasonable prospects for moving within my company to the gloucester area.

Where should I be looking to live? I found some nice houses in Great Malvern (3 bed detached with massive man-cave in the garden for 220k!!), but I have no idea which towns are nice places to live.

Ideal wish list:

Area:

Good off-road riding from the door (few miles of tarmac access acceptable).[/*]

Good road access, i.e. on the motorway in 10-15 mins.[/*]

Commutable (by bike) distance from gloucester (currently do 15 mile bike commute, anything up to around 20 is reasonable).[/*]

Within reasonable distance (walking or bus) of a station[/*]

The sort of town with local shops and nice pubs - hopefully one where I could leave my car unlocked on the drive when I'm sticking the bike in the shed, or walk along the street without being stabbed (I live in Croydon - hence the paranoia).[/*]
The house:

Detached.[/*]

3 bedrooms.[/*]

Garage (or workshop/big shed).[/*]

Good sized garden (if this is a wishlist, then lets call it 'land').[/*]
What can you suggest, oh great STW oracles?

Dave

Cheltenham? Don't live there now, but born and raised there. Good riding around there and commutable to Gloucester I would say. Think there are are plenty of current locals on here who could give you better info on the riding etc..

cheers ag,

if you grew up there, what is the town like? Chav-tastic, or nicely middle class?

I tend towards the John Lewis, waitrose, audi end of the spectrum :o)

If this is the case you'll be fairly cheesed off with Gloucester.
Frampton is a nice village, easy access to big hills.
Waitrose in Stroud (approx 6 miles).
Painswick nice too, right in the middle of big hills.

Ive just moved from Painswick. if you have the cash, 3 miles from Gloucester and a glut of trails on your door. any of the nearer villages are great. Slad, Sheepscombe and Cranham. or if you like a town try Stroud which has a good feel to it and not far from many good rides. drop me a line if you move this way and ill take you around the trails.

the only thing gloucester has going for it is the docks, which are quite nice. The forest is the cheapest part of Gloucestershire, obviously you would have to deal with the locals.

Cheltenham is great. But your budget won't stretch that far in 'nam.
Has great access to motorways and is quick to get anywhere- back to London for an evening- no probs.
Leckhampton Hill, Cleeve Hill and Cranham super close.
Forest, Malvern and Cwmcarn well under an hour.
Loads and loads of cyclists in town- so you'll find riding buddies no probs.

Negatives:
House prices- though you can buy mine-3 bed, garage etc for just within your budget. 😀
Bike crime not great- but just don't take the obvious route back from Leckhampon Hill and you'll be fine.

thanks for the tips so far guys, I quite like the look of stroud and the villages between there and cheltenham.

algore, that 220k was just for a house I saw in great malvern... haven't really thought what the budget will be; current place is worth about 210k, but we have paid off quite a chunk of the mortgage, so might be able to spend quite a bit more to get the 'right' place.

Stroud, Dursley, Ebley, Cainscross, all nice places and plent y of hills, good access to the motorway and london trains.

Quite an environmentally flavoured town, and some of the locals are educated enough to be able to have a conversation with you, as oposed to just grunting like in Gloucester.

I grew up just outside of Ledbury which is 15 mins from Malvern and my older brother lives’ there now, it's a nice place to live and the hills are awesome, he regularly goes out several times a week with a big group on the hills out towards eastnor & British camp

Gloucester/Cheltenham were my local towns growing up, Gloucester has gone downhill (and I don’t mean in the riding sense) Cheltenham is still nice if you can afford the right areas (Montpelier ect),

We live at the bottom end of the Malverns, Ledbury 5 miles , m50 1 mile, Gloucester 12 miles, Malvern Hills 10mins on the bike on local lanes & your on the tracks.
Also have Bredon Hill & the Forest of Dean & North Cotswold all within easy access.
I can be on local bridle paths within 5 mins biking.
Great Malvern has fairly good theatre & Glos & Chelters cinemas. Couple of good restraunts in Ledbury & some good local brews both hop & apple based.

I moved out of the big smoke a few years ago to Shurdington (village just outside Cheltenham). Love it here, because:

* easy access to M5 and to A417/M4 - should you want to escape.
* Cheltenham is 3 Miles away, and there is a good bus service for nights out.
* Gloucester only about 5 - although I don't venture into Gloucester very much.
* 2 decent pubs - Cheese Rollers and The Bell (Good beer, friendly, but not the best food, although it is cheap and plentyfull!) .
* Good riding on your door (Cranham & Leckhampton).
* Easy access to Forest of Dean 35 mins away, Afan (2 hours) and Cwmcarn (1hr 30).
* House prices not as high as Cheltenham!

Worth concidering.

hehe, sensing some strong anti-gloucester feeling here :o)

not sure when we're going to be able to move. My fiancee is going for a job at the moment, if she gets it we'll be here for 2 more years... if not, maybe we'd move in a year or so.

after my soaking wet commute through some lovely parts of london (croydon, streatham, brixton, stockwell, vauxhall..... lovely!) i would happily move tomorrow!

Thanks for all the hints, lots to dream about
Dave

I grew up just outside Gloucester but moved away 7 years ago.

I see the area through rose tinted glasses but realistically Gloucester City lives in the shadow of Cheltenham Town - think poorer cousin.

There has been good advice re the villages in the surrounding areas of both Gloucester and Cheltenham with loads of riding just a stones through from most places.

If you are as you say:

I tend towards the John Lewis, waitrose, audi end of the spectrum

Then you would be happier in either Cheletnham or a surrounding village.

People can be overly critical of Gloucester and some of peoples feelings are genuine but from a practical sense its all there, just not as pretty or as high flying as some of its surrounding areas.

Mind you Cheltenham doesn't have a mighty rugby team.....

Gllllllaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwsssssssttttttteeeeeeeeerrrr

🙂

yep. live right in the middle of it all, (in the "black bit" and I love it here flor the record) me about a mile from the docks. (Im at the Stella, Tesco and VW Passat end of the Spectrum)

Painswick, cranham (and dont forget Haresfield/ Standish that is ace) all round the corner and you can link to leccy/ cleeve too.

I don't think Glos is simply Chelt minus veneer...........they are totally different places........really really different. Just my opinion though!

Pretty much anywhere in Gloucestershire is nice to live, but if I moved back I would poss go over Newent way. It's nice 😀

Stroud area back out toward Chelt is lovely, but again, don't live IN Stroud ;-O

Painswick/Sheepscombe(yes, real name)/Cranham area likky lips lushious but I would imagine the house prices reflect that!!!

Ooh you are taking me back now to all those lovely places where I used to ride horses and tear up your mountainbiking tracks ;-D

as a (ex)social worker what i mean is despite its nice parts, there is social problems/sink holes in chelt. in other words its like any town/city. gloucester kind of wears it on its sleeve. and for that, i like it.
ive family in both. one side are wealthy/horsey types, they love it in chelt. the others are west-indian rastas who love it in tredworth! give me a village near some woods tho...
if you like 'guardian weekend' type living then stroud/nailsworth is great. i like it all but i am a love child of many races and social classes from top to bottom. ive worked the bins and supper with royalty. guess thats why i like it round here.
