I have had a few over the years but they all seem to rapidly lose the ability to make a clean cut. Anybody recommend a set that might last at least a couple of years?
knipex. not cycle specific ones, but far better. had the same pair for 25 years.
The Planet x ones are £7.99, and are the most sturdy, clean cutting ones I've had. 2 yrs old now.
You might have tried them already but I've had a set of the Birzman ones for a couple of years and they still cut cleanly. They're cheap as well.
my park ones are about a decade old now and work perfectly still
EDIT: the only park tool i have apart from a spoke key FWIW
The Felco ones seem to get good reviews.
+1 Felco. Had mine for over 10 years now.
Most decent branded cable cutters (Park, Shimano, Pedros, Knipex etc) are great and will last for years so long as the pivot bolts are kept snug and they're only used to cut cables.
It's when you start using them to cut mudguard stays etc that they tend to loose the ability to make clean cuts.
I recommend not using your cable-cutters to cut spokes - I learned the hard way many years ago!
Cheers, Rich
Cheap lighter. Heat the area you are going to cut for about 30 seconds. I get clean cuts this way with a dirty old set of pliers.
Shimano ones. Got mine in 1997 and still cut well. I should bloody hope so too for the £30 i spent on them at the time!
great tip there jonba
I found a set of Felco cutters under the floor in the first house I bought almost 20 years ago.
They were well used then, and were used daily at work for years. They still get used now and cut perfectly.
I would reckon they are 35/40 years old at least.
I would recommend them.
Park - We have at least 8 pairs knocking around here and they're brilliant. They get used thousands of times a week. Maybe even tens of thousands.
Shimano ones. Got mine in 1997 and still cut well. I should bloody hope so too for the £30 i spent on them at the time!
Same here, blue and grey handles, only ever been used on cables and they are still brilliant. Just think with the rise of Di2 they will become a thing of the past 😥
Another vote for the Felco C7s. They might be expensive, but you'll unlikely need to buy another pair again.
there was a recommendation on here a couple of years ago for a generic set of cutters on ebay. they were a lot cheaper but equally as good as my park ones.
I cant link to ebay from work, but they look like this:

I had a set of those generic eBay ones ^^^ worked brilliantly for 3 or 4 years until I used them on mudguard stays 🙂
Those generic eBay ones look like exact copies of my Felco ones.
(But if they can't manage mudguard stays, they aren't the same 🙂 )
Another vote for those blue and grey Shimano ones. Must be 15+ years old and still cut cleanly (cable, outer and hydraulic hose). A true investment.
Knipex ones for me but as above get somthing else to cutter other things.
I have a small pair of bolt cutters (also knipex ) for guard stays spokes etc
There's a load of Felco 'clones' out there, including the Pedro's cutter and many of the cheaper eBay ones.
The difference is in the steel. Felco ones will go on and on like the Duracell bunny. Cheaper versions will cut ok at first but then go naff.
