Hi, my daughter just got knocked off her bike in Hackney, London. The car driver did a runner and she has a fractured patella so off the bike for 6 - 8 weeks. She’s only just moved there and it has been a worry. I’m thinking she should get a helmet camera (bank of dad will pay for it 🙂)to record as much as possible, so looking for recommendations... also thinking she should do level 3 bikebility. Having a stiff drink now!

Sorry about your daughter, and if you're thinking about cameras then presumably there's been some conversation about her continuing cycling which is heroic.

Don't get cheap ones if you really think they are important, get a decent Cycliq or better 2 for front and rear if you're paying. I think the bikability training would be money better spent though, better to avoid the incident than have it recorded. 👍

Hi tthew, yes the more I think about it training, a more powerful light and more hi-viz kit seem to be a better investment to start with. A camera as well would be good should an accident happen given that drivers often leave the scene without exchanging contact details or behave aggressively. Apologies to all if my post has ended up a bit misleading. Anyway my girl’s enthusiasm for riding is still there...

The chilli tech cam is pretty cheap and seems ok. Think it cost £30-£40 ish (I forget now). Quite a small bullet cam that I’ve mounted on my road bike bars - but still haven’t used yet.

Obviously visibility is key but I didn’t have an issue with me being visible when I got close passed a few months back - the guy deliberately swerved across me and gave me the v’s in the rear view mirror.

So I think a combo of both is required - the more people reported to police for dangerous driving accompanied by video evidence the better.

I've got the chilli tech cam. A few people have successfully reported close passes AFAIK. There is a thread on here about them.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend it. It's useless in low light, and there's no image stabilisation. I've had a couple of close pass incidents on slightly bumpy roads where I've not been able to get the reg in focus. My plan is to save up a bit for something decent.

Saying that, it may help deter people when they see a camera being worn.

Thanks for the info, yes a combo is the best way to go, agree about the deterrent Cameras have. I’ll check out the chilli cam...

I've had one close pass end with a driver being sent on a course and another with a driver being spoken to by police using a chilli tech camera. It has done its job just thus far well enough.
Doubt it does much in the dark but its better than nothing.

This was a test run from the summer. Note you can see the reg of the Range Rover that fails to give way at the roundabout about 25s in even though its at an angle, you need to pause it though.
