[#454564]

Now that they're all the rage, I'm thinking of switching my QR Revs to some bolt-through forks, either QR15 or Maxle. 130mm is the travel I'm after, so what's the best fork to go for, and what're the value options?
Rebas would be a good start, I reckon, but they top out at 120mm; Fox just don't float my boat with all the talk of stanchion wear etc; Revelations are somewhat pricey, it would seem...

I might be wrong but I don't know of any 130mm travel 20mm bolt through forks? If however you said 140mm then its a no brainer PIKES ๐Ÿ™‚

Pike U-turns will go up to 140mm so just set them at 130mm and away you go....

Erm 2009 pikes are coil only and 150mm trael, (addmitadly (sp) u turn)

the 2009 revs, are 140mm air, and bolt thru which are the ones i would choose.

however if you can find some get some duaql air 08 pikes.

I was in the same boat, and after having stanchion wear on my fox 36's (and hearing stories about it happening on rockshox) I bought some 2005 marzocchi z1 freerides which are 130mm travel and bolt through.

Same weight as pike 426's, dont have many fancy adjustments but being old marzocchis they are dead reliable and you dont need to service them every month.

Worth considering since they are cheap 2nd hand

Good to get a bit of discussion on this - my Soda's only rated up to 130mm forks, so 140 is out, if only for peace of mind. '09 Revs are of course tempting, but I'd need to get the U-Turn model to get 130mm, so I'm pretty much going for THE most expensive Revs available.
'08 Pikes - yes, could do, although obviously the weight jumps a bit from the Revs.
The '05 Zocchi's sound like an intriguingly off-the-wall idea, too.

Or I could just stick with my '07 Revs and read about the increased stiffness instead. ๐Ÿ™‚

Why would the weight of 08 air Pikes jump much from 09 Revs? They're pretty much the same fork, aren't they? I'm running 08 Pike air u-turns and they're ace.

05 Marzocchi's are as long if not longer than 140mm Pikes, when I was considering a Cotic I spoke to Cy about it and he said they were too long.

Yeh, your correct on that one. 518mm a2c height which is about the same as lyriks at 130mm.

Works fine on my Alpine but too long if you have a Cotic

OK, so that's out.
For the '08 Pikes, is it possible to get an Air-sprung 20mm variant? And yes, I'd also seen a bit about the Manitous - I know they've been a bit of a joke in the past, but are they any good now?
Another option is Magura, although I don't know a huge amount about their range, except that they're regarded as solid performers.

I've some Magura Thors (140mm, air, bolt-through) fine forks if you can stand the fiddling to find the sweet spot. Think Cy sells them as a package for Souls, so should be Ok height-wise

2010 RS range is something like

80&100mm SID's

120mm Reba

150mm Rev's

170mm Lyrics

200mm Boxxers

They've all gotten bigger lowers/bulges

but it does seem odd not having 2 130-140mm forks, especialy as some XC bikers want 130mm QR forks and others want the same/similar travel but bolt through and tougher.

When faced with this decision I went for the Rev w/maxle, but then decided I only needed 120mm anyway and bought a Reba Team instead.

That's a really great (but not cheap) fork, and highly recommended if you can get by with 120mm.

If you really need 130mm, I'm flogging my barely used 2009 Rev in the classifieds.

(Hope I get away with that plug, since I've also offered constructive advice).

I went from some U-turn Revs on my Soda to some Magura Laurins and have to say they are pretty dammed stiff in comparison.

r.e. the manitous - i've got some minutes on my 29er. its only one or two of the damping types which are dodgy, the rest are pretty good. those particular minutes (the MDR absolute) seem to get good reviews on mtbr, jensonusa and bike radar (their niggle was not getting full travel).

truble is, finding the 130mm, 20mm bolt through version new in the uk seems pretty difficult...

i really want a pair, as my frame is for 130mm forks, i have the option of running bolt through with my wheels, and mt king headset has scored my 130mm revs... ๐Ÿ™
a new headset will be on order too with new forks!

Some 09 Dual-Air Revelation 20mm BT, but get the shop to add in the supplied spacer to put them down to 125mm. I think they'll then be 503mm arch-crown at 125mm, which is still taller than a fox 32(501mm @ 130mm) or magura menja(500mm @ 130mm) (though thors are taller for the same travel)

"Think Cy sells them as a package for Souls, so should be Ok height-wise"
I don't think he does for the soul/simple/soda
The thor is higher than a pike/revelation at the same travel anyway (menjas are lower)
I thought it was a extra leverage ripping the headtube off issue under heavy use with a longer travel/higher fork rather than whether it screws up the geometry?

Chakaping - no, don't think it's a problem mentioning that, IMO. Looks like a good package, although I also think I might have to wait around a bit til s/hand prices drop a little.... ๐Ÿ™‚
And yep, I think Cy mentions a couple of points about length - apparently a2c is important, but not sufficiently that running a shorter a2c 140+mm fork is OK.
Personally I'm keen on 130mm - the extra 10mm of travel over, say, Rebas just seems to put the geometry and ride really in the sweet spot for me. Obviously YRMV
