My X01 11sp cassette is on its last legs now. Can’t complain after 4 years and about 5 chains.
What’s the best option if I don’t need a huge range (I’m a good climber and prefer low cadence)
X01 seem good from current experience but spendy. SLX 10sp cassettes were about £35 a few years ago!
Gx 10-42 are a good balance. Not too heavy and all steel so they last absolutely ages.
I was eying up the Sunrace 10-46 for a little more range but still using the 11 speed mech. But I’ve just bought gx eagle and gone the whole big range hog.
GX is a Shimano freehub though?
I bought an 11 speed (10-42) GX cassette which is XD compatible just before crimble, cost about £60 but 700 miles later, it’s showing VERY little signs of use
NX is the Shimano freehub, GX is still XD 👍
Ah!
No, that's only SX and NX which share the 1130/1230 cassettes and use HG splined freehubs.
GX defo XD - I’ve just taken one off my Ti XD freehub.
SX / NX are Shimano HG.
I accidentally let a chain stretch to 1.0 on a previous GX cassette. It still took a new X1 chain no bother. And another one after that one. Really hard wearing.
GX 11 is the longest lasting cassette I’ve used to date. X01 is stupid money more. I’ve just bought another gx cassette!
I’ve an NX cassette (for sale, ahem) and that’s an XD....
I’ve an NX cassette (for sale, ahem) and that’s an XD….
What size is the smallest cog?
There are two GX cassettes, XG-1150 and XG-1175. 1150 is cheaper and is 394g, 1175 costs more but its a fair bit lighter(325g).
90 euro for the cheaper one on R2, 130 for the lighter one. They're both pinned, compared to the 'single block of steel' expensive ones but seem to last just as well.
Not sure where donsolo got one for £60 but GX last a bloody long time. I've just replaced the one on my hardtail after 5500k. It was absolutely knackered, to the point the chain whip wouldn't engage at all.
@Tomhoward. It’s a 10t. It’s printed XD only on the back. It’s clearly an XD. It may not be an NX however 😂
Can’t remember from who but I got lucky and found mine in a clearance / liquidation of stock sale on eBay, was well chuffed
Looking online I think it might be a GX. All cogs are pinned except the two smallest.
It may not be an NX however
Correct. Possibly X1
I think you could be right. Best amend my ad and ask for more £££ 😂
GX 1150 is very good value for money lasts for years. Also impressive weight.
The GX 11150 10 to 42 speed cassette is the pinnacle of the cassette durability/weight/cost/range balance
Looks like i'm not the only one to think that either.
I got an SROAD cassette off AliExpress recently - not XD, but those do exist. £70, and lighter weight than SRAM Red equivalent. All steel (although options some have alu cogs), and perfect shifting without needing any adjustment.
Might be worth looking if you can wait 2-3 weeks for delivery, and want to save a ton of cash and weight.
Can't say I've any experience of the gx but I've lots and lots of miles on a pair of x01 cassettes. Spendy up front but assuming they're still available I'll be replacing like for like when they need doing. By my maths and ignoring 2020, or the year of the road bike as it shall be known, I'm at <£40 a year.
The xt 11 speed I put on another wheel as its hg only was significantly less outlay but lasted 2months before it started skipping.

£60? where did you get it for £60?
Got a part-worn GX 10-42t I was about to put on eBay if that's of interest?
I've gone over to the Sunrace 10-46t cassettes - which I'm quite pleased with in terms of quality and having that bit of extra range.
