Will be staying in Dingwall next week and fancied the possibility of a munroe by bike before winter overtakes autumn. Has anybody ridden Ben Wyvis? What's it like in terms of technicality, it's it worth the effort? Was thinking of going up the normal walkers route from just south of Garbat and then adding on the tops to the north east surrounding Loch a Choire Mhoir as an out and back.
It's ok. Not a mega classic but not shit either. All rideable up and down until the steep section on An Cabhar which is a push/carry up. From the top of that it's all rideable to the summit. The top bit of An Cabhar is good riding down but the middle section through the stone steps is less fun although you might be able to find wee trods that avoid the steps.
Worth doing if you're in the area but not worth a special journey I'd say

Descending the walkers path is rubbish, way too steep for most of it. The bottom section is fun though.
The descent to the North via Tom a Choinnich is an absolute cracker though. You can get back to garbat on the track alongside Loch Bealach Culaidh. The track goes tight through into Garbat forest, despite not showing on the OS map.
Tour de Ben from Dingwall is a great gravel run if the weather is bad for going high level.
Out to Garve via Contin, up the aforementioned track over to Loch Glass, Evanton, back road to Dingwall.
Little Wyvis is worth a go. Only a Corbett, but a reasonable track all of the way to the summit, and a nice view towards Ben Wyvis.
