V2 model.
Have picked one up second hand and thinking of using it for uplift days and Morzine etc. It's 150/160 travel with a RS Super Deluxe Air shock and RS Lyrik Select Forks.
So do i leave it as is? Its fine and stop being a nelly.
Or
Swap out rear for a coil and get some bigger forks like 170mm 38s / Zeb.
Anyone done this? Did it make any difference either good or bad?
In my experience (Transition Scout and Transition Patrol) they always feel better with a coil.
I actually bumped my 2020 Scout up to the 150/160 travel mark (Ultimate Delux coil and Zeb) and found that was excellent for places like Dyfi/rowdy off piste - 29er wheels would have helped smooth things out a bit more, but I'm a short arse and don't get on with them.
For a lot of riders, the Lyrik works a lot better than Zebs (that's what I found back to back @ about 75kg).
I'd never argue about buying a coil shock... especially if you have an air one to pop back on when/if needed. If nothing else, having 2 shocks works well for when it comes to servicing etc. Do it.
Not sure what the damper is like in the Select level fork, but in places like Morzine a fork that works well and has a good damper really helps given the way the braking bumps develop. I found the Yari that I had years ago very harsh vs the 38's that I've used in more recent years (I have Performance level 38s on my uplift bike, no need for the factory level stuff).
I put zebs on my sentinel and it was a game changer for me compared to the Yaris I had before
Def go with a coil. Forks too if you can deal with the extra weight.
I have ohlins coil front and rear on my scout and I can ride everything I would ever want to (not sure I want to routed it at revs though). Amazing bikes made better with coil suspension, a sentinel will be a monster with that lot
Merlin still have the Fox 38 Performance for £350
I have one on my enduro bike and it's a really good fork - better than my stock Zeb Ultimate (Charger 3).
Coil shock would be fab too, I'm sure.
Would 150/170 not be a bit unbalanced though??
Cascade link and a coil would be my pick for beefing up a sentinel. IME if you're over ~80ish kg you'll really notice the stiffness of a zeb but the damping and +10mm travel isn't that noticeable.
Assuming DH tyres and suitable brakes are already on there.
Would 150/170 not be a bit unbalanced though??
Sorry, just to clarify, I don't have a Sentinel.
That mismatch has worked well for me on other bikes in the past - and I'm sure you could find some online discussion about doing it to that model.
Or just get the Cascade link as well, as suggested above 😉
I had a V1 Sentinel, as did a good friend, we both got cascade links and both thought they really improved the bike. We both now have Spires!
I'd suggest get the cascade link first and then some 170 forks
I just put a coil on my Spire. It's great. I don't notice the weight. I have taken it on big trail rides and it's also still great.
Thanks - that's really not helping my urge to swop out the X2 for a coil on my Spire!
Not a Sentinel, but I run my Ripmo at 170/150. No issues at all. Cascade link made a big difference to that too, just snagged a coil to go on the back as well. I'd say definitely go 170 though, burly tyres, turn it into a smasher.b lined my mate's Sentinel!

My warranty replacement X2 blew after 80 hours. 150 hour service intervals.
I worked out my RS Vivid Coil Ultimate RC2T (under £400 from Bike Inn) would pay for itself in reduced servicing.
Works really well on the Spire, from rowdy rocky DH tracks to decent climbs on Peak District days. Set and forget and not touched lockout yet.
Sorry.
Cheers for that link Chakaping. Have taken the punge on those 38s. I have the same forks on my wild and love how stiff, plush and easy to live with they are.
So thats half the battle sorted 🙂
I’m not sure my judgment is great on this because I spend so much time riding hardtails, but for me a stiffer and better damped fork always makes more difference than I expect. On my Levo I’m running the bizarre combination of a Deluxe RT 210x55 with a 170mm Grip2 38 fork. Had a 160mm RC2 Lyrik before. Big forks FTW!
I just snagged a cascade link for my sentinel V2 in their 50% off black Friday sales. It's listed as a scout 2020-2025 link, but they are the same as the sentinel V2.
Works out as £150 delivered to UK.

Hmm why can i not see this? Was it through the UK site as my browser is blocking that.
I’ve got a v2 Sentinel - running 160mm lyriks and a Vivid Coil and Cascade link on the back.
I found I blew through the travel when I put a coil shock on with the standard linkage (Cane Creek Kitsuma). The Cascade link really helped - but also I really like the Vivid coil. Less adjustments than the Kitsuma but they make more difference - and the HBO means you can get away with a lighter spring for a more plush feel but without having any heavy bottom outs.
As I’m only running 160mm up front I’m running the Cascade link with a shorter stroke than standard so I have about 155mm travel at the rear. But if you are running 170mm Zebs / 38s then running the Cascade link with the normal stroke length shock gets you to 165mm travel. I reckon that would be awesome on park days.
Overall I love the Sentinel and there’s nothing else out there I’d really want to replace it with.
