OK, so I'm fitting a set of Deore (FC-M442) square taper cranks to my 1x1. I was running the same cranks on my old frame with 68x110 BB without any problems, but having checked on Shimano's website, they say I should be using a 126mm spindle. This sounds sensible as I reckon I'll need the extra clearance for the wider chainstays on the Surly.

Only problem is that I can't for the life of my find a 73x126 square taper BB. Nearest I can find is a 73x122 UN54 on special order from Wiggle.

Anyone got any ideas where I can source one, will the 122mm be that different, or should I just bite the bullet and get someone to wrench the square taper cranks from my cold, dead hands.

Shimano square taper only go up to a 122mm on the Madison b2b - just checked for you.

We can get Octalink no worries though.

isnt that chainset a triple? just a thought but no doubt you're running a single ring (somewhere around 32t?), so if this is positioned on the outer part of crank, you wont need to run so long a bb.. I may have one to fit--need to check length, though. email in profile if interested.

There is no 126mm Shimano square taper BB. Where did you see that you need one that length? From memory I thought the FC-M442 ran a 122mm BB.

I would read this as use a 118mm or 122mm depending on chainline.

thebikechain - checked myself on Madison earlier, amongst other places. Am starting to think its a misprint in the spec.

trebord - yes, it's a triple, and was running it as such on my old bike when not in singlespeed mode. When running singlespeed, I was running at 32T Salsa ring in the middle chainring position (outer ring gave me a dodgy chainline). New frame is only ever going to be run SS, so I reckon I could easily get away with a shorter spindle, although as I said, the 1x1 does have really wide chainstays, so will need some clearance.

Mister P - yes, that's where I got the info from...

Could be a misprint. Found a few of those over that past year...

Doh!.. . Am clearly an idiot. Was reading the document wrong (was reading the specs top to bottom). It's actually an 110mm or 113mm spindle I need, which explains why the setup was working OK on the old frame.

Thanks for the help folks...

I'll get my coat...
