I'd say you could prob still lose a cm or two off that lol
Was just reading a ST mag (circa 2008) review on a Stumpy. Said it came with a 660mm bar which could be cut down if required.

Not for all of us. I was running 620mm bars last year.
Back when I started riding, wide bars were 23" or 584mm, and you'd have bar ends taking up 15mm each side of that.
Yep, bars used to be 580mm standard. In the very early 90's we used to cut them down further!
Mate's got an old specialized that he's doing up, bars are proper narrow, feels like you're going to fall off constantly!

I used to ride off road with 470 mm bars. I only stopped there as the controls wouldn't move in any closer.
That was too narrow.

I was actually referring to what the mags are saying as opposed to what a lot of people are riding out on trail.
Can't get to the second paragraph of and review without a mention of either 'bike is brilliant as the std bars are 750mm ' or 'bike would be better if stem was shorter and the bars were wider'
I'd read that bar width should be just a bit wider than your shoulders. So I took the 560mm bars that came on my first MTB, held them up to my shoulders and lopped off as much as I dared which was about an inch or so each end.
That shoulder thing was pretty stupid advice. Although now the other extreme seems to be fashionable - bars should be as wide as your outstretched arms.
