At such a time as it becomes possible to get a new bike, the next decision will be AXS vs Shimano 12 speed. Electronic shifting looks amazing but I can’t help wondering why SRAM brought out 10-52 without a more sensible range of teeth. The last jump of 10 seems crazy to me and would probably push me towards sticking with Shimano.
Would be interested if anyone has experience of both. I currently have Shimano 1x12 so plenty of experience using that.

Mix and match? I’m running XX1 AXS with an 10-51T XT cassette and chain - best of both worlds and hasn’t missed a beat in 2 years.

Didn't realise that would work! In that case I might just change to AXS on my current bike first...

I am using AXS with the 10 to 50t GX cassette, not an issue.

GX upgrade kit is quite reasonable, if I can bring myself to go that low....

Two reasons, weight and cadence.

The 10-42 is steel, so adding a bit to each has quite an effect on the weight, hence the difference between shim and SRAM. You could go the Shimano way and add more alloy cogs, but SRAM don't expect you to be in 52 very often, it's considered the bailer gear for when you need it I think, not part of the range of gears you use all the time. The smaller shifts on the 10-42 means nicer shifts and better cadence gaps.

It works just fine with the 52 tooth cog, I would say it's a total non-issue. I use the mega granny gear all the time, but there are a lot of steep climbs at my local. I have another bike with xt. I won't go as far as to say I can't tell the difference, but the reality is as long as they are both working correctly it makes next to no difference to your day on the bike. That being said, the XT mech has shat the bed after 1000km.

Personally I don't like the bailout philosophy of SRAM, I now have Shimano. I often end up double-upshifting through the higher gears anyway, so closer ratios aren't really important, ymmv with terrain probably. You better be ready for it when you shift into the SRAM bailout gear, it caught me out a few times, as it's a big step in momentum, and not the nicest shift under power (when you're likely to need it) - you don't want to accidentally shift into it just to make the pedalling a little bit easier. If like me you don't keep track of what exact gear you're in most of the time. Then you need to figure out when it's eased up a bit and you're ready to shift out of it.

AXS with XX1 cassette and chain. 10-50t. Smooth, excellent shifting. Stuck 2000km on mine since November. Go for it.

Some people aren't pleased with anything these days, don't become a STW tech Timmy.

I appreciate that big granny on steep climbs and after riding for several hours. On fly adjustment is also great. Holding the shifter paddle you can drop or up 3 gears at a time. Works fine, although if you're reading the trail you won't need it much. Some people don't understand that and constantly mash gears though.

P.s. I'd never go back to manual shifting. It's also very easily serviceable, removable and cleaned without cables. Easy to set up. Such attributes have led to better bike maintenance. I tend to strip it all and clean it every few 100km.

The experience of installing and setting up my other half's AXS was enough for me to know I wanted one!
