[Closed] Avid Joicy 5s. Blocked lever reservoir?

Bled rear brake fine, following a mixture of bleed kit instructions and Mr Nutt's excelent guide (thanks).

However with front the caliper syringe just wont pump fluid into the lever one. There ismovment between the lever and the caliper syringe, so the problem doesn't seem to be in the hose, and the lever syringe will pump some fluid in-out of the reservoir. It's just that the two will not connect together.

Anyone know what the hell is going on here?

cheers,

Alex

Has the lever taken a knock, if there's something causing the lever to be pressed then that'll cause those symptoms.

Lever works fine, although pistons a bit sticky, but that's another story.

If the piston's a bit sticky then that's probably the cause. If it's stuck in slightly then it's probably covering the transfer port from the rservoir into the cylinder.

i had that problem on my codes, it was the piston in lever which was sticking.
its lying in pieces on my desk at the moment, hoping it will work when i put it back together again.

I did find that a temp solution when bleeding them was to pull on the lever syringe which cause the piston to unstick. but du to sloppy rebound of lever i took it all apart afterwards anyway.

Mikkel, tried pulling the lever end (ooh err!) but to no avail. Proper jammed they both were.

Coatesy, aren't the pistons supposed to be held right into the caliper by the bleeding block?

I guess you're talking about the caliper pistons sticking then, not the master cylinder piston.

Yep, the master cylinder is at the lever end, as it would be under the peddle in a car? That seemed OK, I was able to get the pistons to move, just one was a little reluctant.

So Doc, what's the diagnosis? Can it be saved?

Right, discounting the obvious(elastic still around the lever, or a kinked/blocked hose), and bearing in mind the sticky caliper pistons, I'd pull the entire system apart to investigate and give it a service at the same time, but I do this for a living anyway. If you find ending up with a box of components intimidating then ask a mechanic at your LBS to take a peek. The only reason I can think of that stops fluid going from caliper to reservoir is something blocking the hole(transfer port)at the bottom of the reservoir, and the only obvious thing that will do that is a stuck master cylinder piston (do you have a bit of free travel in the lever before if feels like it's operating the piston inside? More to the point, have you sprayed anything like TF2 around the lever pivots, as this will cause the seals to swell and stick)

OK, sounds like a thorough diagnosis, that's what I'll do. Not been squirting anything untoward at it, but it's a used system, so who knows... Worse case scenario is a trip to the LBS or even a cheap replacement from the classifieds.

So, is there a servicing kit or something I need, are there replaceable parts in there? Washers, seals, pistons etc?

Thanks again,

ALex

Yup, pretty much everything is available from LBS(via Fishers)as seperate assemblies, though not everything is straightforward i.e. caliper pistons are called "pressure foot kit".
