Just want to know if they're powerful, reliable and can they handle massive, steep Alpine-style descents that tend to fry some brakes and lead to fade etc? Ta v much.

Elixir Rs are up to it with decent sized rotors and good pads. I don't think you should have a problem. I really rate elixirs for power and progressive feel. 5s are just slightly heavier IIRC.
