Hopefully they'll do some which are loose enough to fit knee pads under but tight enough at the ankle not to catch in the chain, then I can race BMX and 4X in them as well.

Quite like those. Got two pairs of Howies Epic Eds in their recent sale, for less than half price - more than happy with them, and they're just the right side of respectable for work, too.

Flashy, why such a hater potater?

Iz it coz you iz a bit podgy and woon't look good in them? Bit too old for the jeans and t-shirt look? More of a suit and trouser clips Brompton kinda guy?Is that what it is?

That's pretty much my Summer Urban Pootling 'look'. Rolled up jeans, t-shirt, trainers/sandals. Mind you, I can pull it off, what with being Well Buff™ an ting. I can appreciate such a look woon't work on others...

U iz just jelus.

No, just a bloke who rides a bike around in That London, what does not in any way want to look like a proper spod. I just want to be comfy and not look too 'cyclist' really. Not the best look if you're meeting up with folk for drinks and stuff. 'Cycling clothing' is for long distance/all day riding, not for going down the pub or for a bite to eat.

Are you a Spod?

I used to have a fixed gear, both then and now I would not have these strides. Bandwagon much?

Levis do make some excellent sweatshops, but these are pretty weak. Extra high back? They haven't done their research.

I see the racing rollers have been an attempt at the scene, they should have gone with polo or a messenger for a more faux authentic look. I'm not happy about his shift from flats to drops on the pretend hill either.

Corduroy is all you need. It's just a shame they don't last as long as jeans 🙁

The advert screams "don't actually wear these outside" if he tore the bike off the rollers at the end and went to do some fixie stunt around San Francisco, then maybe, but overall, no, they're tighter than a Yorkshireman in Ron Hill tracksters...

I am interested in this product.
Hopefully they will have considered the cyclist's physique - i.e. large thighs and 'seat', rather than the fixie rider's physique i.e. 13 year old girl

Most of the really, really fast cyclists I know and have met, bar the odd Chris Hoy and that, have not had overly large thighs and certainly not fat arses....

You're talking about the 'Typical STWers' Physique', aren't you? Completely different.

Don't ask me how, as I'm not totally sure myself, but I just managed to ride to work in....wait for it.....totally normal clothes. You know, a pair of normal jeans, a normal t-shirt and some normal shoes (Well, FiveTen Freeriders, but not worn for the gnar).

What's amazing is, lots of other people were doing the same. I'd imagine that in other cities, there are also lots of people who managed to get around without "specialist" jeans this morning...

😉

yes, because there's more of them and they're more likely to buy these than all those really, really fast cyclists that you've met who just wear bib shorts and pantyhose

A rather confusing article -

There’s no word as yet on price point, but a quick look at a variety of online retailers in the UK shows standard 511 jeans coming in at between £50 and £80, depending where you shop.

so while the Levi’s range is set to be US-only

Huh?
[edit]Oh, I get it £50-£80 for normal 511s, but the Commuter ones are US only.

I have a problem with 'slim' fit trousers and it's not like I'm a pro athlete but anyone who knows me will confirm theres not a lot of body fat. Worse in summer when I ride more - ie definitely an issue.

Those Levis are based on the 511 which I'm pretty sure I found to tight on my thighs....

I bet they're nearer £150

That would be my guess - Limited Edition Levis have been up to £200 in the past. Shame Levi's don't deal with properly tall people - long leg is only 34" most of the time - so no good for me. Nice idea though.

Yeah, like me.

But having something that is both comfy and practical, and a bit stylish, what's wrong with that? I mean, you tried to look as cool as you could this morning, din't you? Then you went out and felt a bit deflated because some achingly cool young hipster breezed past you on his bike, with his iPad an ting, on his way to a gallery to discuss his latest 'installation'...*

Actually, if you were wearing cotton jeans and a t-shirt this morning, you probbly wooduv bin soaked. So you'duv looked a bit silly really like a half-drowned bedraggled rat.

Nah, you just can't hackett that some folk are younger and trendier than you and hang out with cool sexy chicks....

As I cycled home, on my fixie, last night I was starting to seriously consider the Muxu jeans. The intersection of seams in the crotch of my jeans was really rather uncomfortable.

It's doesn't bother me when riding round town on my mtbs but you put more pressure on it, on a firmer saddle, on the road bike.

I usually commute in my lycra but it's a bit ott as its only 4miles. So more 'normal' trousers designed with teh cyclist in mind look like a good bet.

I saw the Levis a few weeks ago on FGG (haterz gonna hate) and thought about ordering a pair from the 'states, but skinny jeans don't really do it for me. The Muxu are a slightly more straight leg cut by the look of them.

From FGG:

According to Josh's article; Levi's will offer the 511 Commuter reviewed here, plus the
Trucker Jacket through selected stores and Urban Outfitter stores thru the summer of 2011
with on-line sales to follow. Katz says prices will remain the same as regular 511 jeans.

Price = 78USD. That's not bad at all - I reckon you'd probably get a pair over to the UK (*if* they would ship them which of course Levi's online store wont) for about that price in £

You like that one innit Flashy? 😉

Nah, I think it's good that companies are starting to embrace cycling a lot more, and think of it as having a 'cool' image. I like what Rapha do, some of it, and one or two other firms.

One small independant cycle clothing company is Ana Nichoola, which was founded by the sister of STWer Leggyblond. Only birds stuff (can't understand quite why she can't design me some trousers but there you go), but it's great to see people really pushing the image of cycling as something fun, exciting, and above all, sexy.

I think the people that don't see a need for cycling specific jeans, don't actually ride bikes.
Normal jeans for riding?

Saw something about these several months ago, but as I bought some half price 511s in the Canary Wharf shop in June I'm sure that they'll last me for the next couple of years.

Normal jeans for riding?

I once wore a pair of cut-off jeans for a Beastway race. Shooduv seen the looks of disgust on the start line.

And then again, at the end as I waited for them to come over the line way after I'd finished. 😀

I've ridden all day in jeans. If 'cycling specific jeans' are more comfy and practical, bring 'em on!

aP; why you is no tell me half-price in CW? Why you is no buy for me them?

Wouldn't Swirve jeans do the job just as well? £80 and available skinny or normal / wider fit. All the features (I think) and not made by some corporate giant.

I'm not sure I want to ride in jeans though, terrible in wet or heat and will wear out so quickly you will still look compromised in the pub or dress down friday etc.

swrve?

Yeah probs do the same job. Can't see that the fabric is treated though? Go some Alpkit jeanius jeans which are nice but I like the look of the Levi's (and the swrve's!). Not for full on rides but for nipping into town and little errands.

Been keeping an eye on them over the past few months and had a look on their site last night. The cut is all wrong for what I'd be looking for in cycling jeans. Had a look at the jacket but the back of it looks crap.

Check out Fred Perrys old school cycling gear that just came out over the past few days. The jacket is like a bin bag but I quite like it. Shoes on the other hand..

I'd check the Muxu ones, they look pretty good. But

Hopefully they will have considered the cyclist's physique - i.e. large thighs and 'seat', rather than the fixie rider's physique i.e. 13 year old girl

this.

bought a pair of 511s not realising they were "cycling" jeans - certainly wouldn't ride a bike very far in them, just standard slim fit jeans with a bit of stretch in them....

Normally buy 514's (Slim straight) in the US for $40 a pair. 511's are the same price, but noticeably slimmer. Tried the 511's, and I'm quite a whippet (30w-32l), but I think most people of my age would want a little more cloth in their trousers - hence I wear 514's.

Might look out for a pair next time I'm over, but not at list price.

So basically it's a pair of jeans for people who commute a distance long enough to warrant the use of specific cycling bottoms (like shorts or cycling trousers).

Something that shout very loudly "LOOK LOOK LOOK AT ME I AM A CYCLIST... BUT I AM A CYCLIST THAT IS SO AWESOME I DON'T USE CYCLING KIT".

Now I bet you the marketing department of Levis is filled up with marketeers from specialized...
