Morning all,

Can anyone tell me what clutch mechs (if any) that I can run with an old 9 speed sram x9 shifter?

I fear you may be out of luck. Iirc clutch mechs came in with all the 10s systems

^ as above, use 10 speed Shimano with a spacer at the cable mount, works great althogh may require a bit of trial and error to get the spacer size just right.

I've got a wee spacer I machined for it, <somewhere>, that'll adapt a shimano one to work. Drop me an email at andrew@blackjack.f9.co.uk and then nag me every couple of days and I'll have a look and quite possibly even find it.

It's basically 6mm of spacer- you can do it with washers and a long bolt but this just finesses it and makes it work that much nicer. I found it works basically like stock.

It's not that exciting a different either, to be fair, if you want chain retention it's a wee bonus but not massive, it's narrow/wide rings that make that work properly... But it controls it a bit better for multi rings, and cuts noise and slap right down, that's nice.

Yes, you will need a spacer on the mech cable clamp as others have explained.

I am running a (10sp) short cage shadow+ mech on an 8 speed drivetrain with Sram X4 shifters. It works brilliantly, the narrow wide ring helped but the clutch mech is what keeps the chain on during rocky descents.

I ran a sram mech 1x9 without any problems for a while. sram mechs always had stronger springs.

I don't think that's true tbh (source: broke the clutch mech in one of my mechs while in the alps and took it out, chain stayed on. Built an XC bike with a clutch mech and a narrow wide and a top-only chain guide, chain fell off

Cheers for the info folks. I've basically built up a cheap hack from spares (Nice frame that I had welded up) and did a bodged 1x conversion and the chain won't stay on on bumpy ground.

I ordered a NW superstar chainring in the sale at the minute and the rear mech I'm using has seen better days so I thought I'll try and get something on there with a clutch anyway.

Andrew, I've emailed you about the spacer.

Does anyone know, will an slx one work also?

Yep, all the 10 speed shimanos are basically the same from that point of view

ditto.

I've used X9 & X0 in 1x9 set ups without a guide.

One used a NW ring the other a STD Hope SS find and I can't recall ever dropping the chain.

Both springs seem far stronger than the SLX mechs I have and lighter too!
