My orange RP23 (from a Five) now I have done an air sleeve service still has a problem with the compression stroke.

When you compress the shock esp when platform is off sinks about 5-10mm before it 'bites' and then becomes smooth and progressive. Anyone else with this problem. Dya think it needs a full service or am I worrying about nothing? BTW no external or internal problems I could see 🙂

Hi Mate just taken a look at my 5 08 model RP 23
Now I am off the bike and flicked the lever
from pro pedal to fully open and the shock does not
sink 5 mm.
Actualy no movement at all.

Is this new? also you are ment to service yourself approx
every 40 miles and you should send to MOJO each year for a
full internal service.

No sorry Grantway what I meant is that when pro-pedal is off lean on teh bike to compress - is the stroke smooth or does it have a lump onthe initial stroke - 5-10mm compression then becomes harder to compress i.e. easy 5-10mm then you hit a lump then it goes harder?

Seen a few like this through the workshop but its usually solved by just doing an air can service.Spoke to mojo and they say the same thing....weird.

If it was mine and under warranty it would be straight back to Mojo. they turn it around in a day so you would hardly miss it -)

I guess I would have to contact Orange first as it was with a New Five frame I got in Jan?

Edit: Right looked on orange and they say to get in touch with the dealer. I have emailed SunsetMTB who I got the frame off to try and get it checked out under warranty 🙂

Sorry for late rep;y but no.
Think this is a shock isssue and the shop will tell you
to send shock first.
You have to contact MOJO and they have an on line form to fill
and print that out and send with shock.
Will have it back as above within a day ot two.

Keep us updated

Right - phoned mojo - tis a warranty issue - he said there has been an air leek into the central fluid resoviour hence teh foamy sount and the intial fast compression i.e. the air compresses 🙂

Will send to Mojo for full service under warranty yey! Cheers Guys!

Reply from mojo today:

Tested, damper not cavitated.

Noise that you can hear is the float fluid transferring through the port and charging the negative chamber. This is normal and does’t affect the
performance of the shock.

This does not seem to explain the initial fast sink when I lean on the bike or the frothy sound it HAS developed. I have emailed back 😯

I also got a reply from another shock servicing company in teh interim:

We have seen this and informed the Distributors. But they have not seen this at all and deny it.

It is the new slim air piston seal that moves in the air piston a few mm and this can cause the lack of 'bite' as you put it. We have only been able to solve this by using a very hard to get hold of glide ring which is a little thicker to prevent the initial play.

I would send it back under warranty as this is the only way Fox and Mojo can solve this for the future.

Confused 😯

I will see if things have changed when I get it back 😐

If it's the case of the seal moving, it's hard to see how it could result in as much as 5 to 10mm of play.

It does sound like air in the damper (ie 'cavitated') to me, but mojo say not?

One way to test is:

Take the air sleeve off and then try to compress the damper. It should still be quite difficult to compress (due to the pressurised damper) and not have any play.

Cheers Ash

I got in the post today so thanks for the quick turn around time and seal change and service etc.

I'm going to put it on tonight and so won't worry about it now 🙂

Cheers for the good 'customer service'.

Subject: RE: RP23 warranty service

We tested the shock on our dyno with no air sleeve and could find no signs of cavitation, with the air sleeve on and float fluid inside the aircan it sounds like the float fluid was passing through the small hole from the positive to the negative chamber with the air causing it to sound and feel like its cavitiated. I know more about this as it happened to my 2010 RP23 and a few rides and its gone.
Hope this helps

I have exactly the same problem on my 2009 RP2.

Did the full service solve it? And was it done free?

I had the exactly the same issue on an 08 Five at 9 months old. Mojo took it in, gave full service and was back on the bike three days after dropping off at LBS at no cost to me. The shock seems to work better than it ever had before.

I have just been in contact with the shop and they have been in contact with mojo.

mojo are saying that it is a feature of the shock, and it is nothing to worry about. I have told the shop that it wasnt doing this when i got the bike and there is somthing not right.

We have found out it only does this when the shok is pummped up to 240psi, it only starts to become apperent when the presure is over 200psi.

What presure are you running? and do you get the samething if it is over 200psi?

i think they are trying to fob me off... I have told the shop to send it to mojo to get them to have a look at it, i will be having words.

Does anyone have any contacts details of mojo (of a good engineers there) or do you work there?

nearly all my mates with full sus bikes ride fox shox and never have had this problem...

woop woop, just got word that mojo have not admitied there is a fault with my shock, but i have got a new 2010 shock so i am not bothered.

spoke to TF Tuning and they know there is a fault and all that needs to be done is get some thicker plastic bits for the sweeper seal and fit them, problem solved...

The plastic bits from the specialized are thincker and solve the problem.

I will see how the new shock goes 🙂

Nezbo they never do when I had problems with my one first thing
they asked was do I use Muck off etc I said yes They then said
well thats the problem dont use that.
I then Laughed and said I only put two squirts in a large bucket
of cold water.
They still blamed the Muck Off But sorted it out.

Glad you got a new one
