I know shimano say you need a new mech but anyone tried old style mech and did it work?

Do they? I can't provide the experience you're after, but it's a 10 speed cassette so should work just like any other 10 speed cassette. I suppose the only reason there might be a theoretical issue is that the old mechs were only rated for a 27T large sprocket, but they all worked with at least a 28 (I have experience of running an old 9-speed road mech with an 11-28 cassette). I'm sure it will be fine.

Yeah thing they say you need longer mech to accommodate 28 teeth. Think you are right that old one will work tho'

I think you can squeeze another tooth out of it and go to 28 (I read this somewhere after looking into it myself)
Funny this post as my 6700 mech just failed - the cage top pivot has seized and no amount of lube cured it - oh well dont think it liked the -10 temperatures last winter 🙁 spare jockey wheels now anyway 🙂
