they were stopping people with snowboard helmets attached to the backs of backpack and in carry-on bags when i flew back from grenoble earlier in the year so i wouldnt even think about not putting it in my baggage to check in.
Just carry it in your hand baggage or separately
Given that you could probably stuff it with lots of other stuff - I doubt it takes that much room up in your main bag

I've always packed it in my hold luggage, peak off, and stuffed full of clothes. You can get quite a bit in them!
