Looking at flights for September. Is it true BA take bikes for free up to 23kg? Is this along with hand luggage going to get enough kit for a week XC riding in the mountains?

Thanks

It forms part of your overall weight allowance. Make sure you check how any pieces of luggage you're allowed as well as this is also a deciding factor on some routes (e.g. USA).

BA allow you to pack your bike in a plastic 'CTC bag' (from Wiggle) saving a but of cash/aggro when packing.

Yep, check bike in as main luggage and pay £40 (I think) for extra luggage (clothes and riding kit etc)

Usually pack bike into cardboard bike box with pipe lagging and zip ties etc. Never had any problems.

Flew back from Geneva and remember seeing our whole groups bikes left on the Tarmac by BA. Good job this was us coming home. Bikes were delivered a few days later. Annoying for some in the group who had also been stung with excess baggage charges!

Yes, to Atlanta, GA and San Francisco, CA. Easy both times and the bikes went as part of your luggage allowance. We were allowed an additional piece of luggage, so had two pieces each. Got a bike bag off CRC for £45 for the other half, fitted her pigmy sized hard rock fine.

Just be careful because even with our relatively light xc bikes it seems easy to add a lot of weight into the bag, once you have added tools, helmet, pads etc.

Check if you will be charged for an additional piece of baggage in Europe, if that is where you are headed. Also worth double checking as I thought BA had recently changed their policy for sporting equipment.
