Would prefer an 11, and preferably full kit on a decent rim.

Not averse though to buying just the hub and building it up myself.

secondary question - is the 11 worth that much more than the 8?

I've got a pair of 29'er rims with an Alfine 8 Speed hub, brand new never been built up if you are interested. PM me, and I'll describe in more detail and send pics if needed.

ive just got a 8 from on-one for £200 and they have the 11 for £400, and it cost me 35 to get my wheel built up. I got a 18t cog on rear but need a 20 putting one for off road stuff on my 29er

Have at look at www.rosebikes.co.uk

btw, I have an 8, definitely the best thing i've bought for my bike.

Hmmm decent deal. Best I've found so far is rose bikes have the 8 for £150 and the 11 for £300. Shame most places that have wheelsets seem to be 29ers for some reason.

I take it the wheelbuild didn't include spokes or nipples in that £35? Bargain if it did!

Anyone used both the 8 and the 11? Reviews of the 11 online appear to be mixed

Edit - Mackem, no tensioner? did the bike have singlespeed dropouts?

I have been running an 8 on my 29er for the last year , I love it
The gaps between the ratios are larger then a STD 9 or 10 speed system but the range is good which is why I was sad to see the 11 has a wider range but the gaps were the same as the 8
I also love the function of changing gear without pedaling you be amazed how often this is useful
My bike now changes between single speed and a hub gear

Actually, scratch that, Rose bikes has a complete wheelset, including dynamo front hub, for not much more.
